Excuse my ignorance, I'm still using the stock halogens, Are they just too bright without the retrofit shroud directing the beam? Why is it a "bad idea" to use HIDs on stock headlight assemblies?

The stock headlights are "reflectors" designed for halogen bulbs. When an HID is put into one, it causes glare due to unfocused light being scattered.. blinding other drivers.

HIDs are meant to be put into "projectors" which concentrate the output and create a cutoff which focuses the light to the ground and not into other people.

Eyelids also help some with the glare in stock housing.

Eyelids will kill your down focused light, not up. The top of the reflector gives you the light closer to the truck.

True. But most of the blinding scatter comes from the top of the reflective bowl.

Either way. Bump, for a good deal.
