Checked in here to address the windshield crack. We are pretty certain that the Mirror Riser itself is not causing the crack just by being installed with mirror, ball, device on it. We've had a LOT of them running well over a year with no issues.

I'm still waiting to hear back from Richie to confirm...so the following is NOT absolute...but we *THINK* it is the act of adjusting the arm of the mirror. That produces a lot of extra leverage that might be producing the pressure necessary on the glass to crack it.

The mirror head is easy to adjust...it moves with little force on the ball. There is no danger in adjusting your mirror head while on the Mirror Riser. However the mirror ARM is VERY hard to move and requires a LOT of force to adjust up and down. It is quite tight on the ball on the mount. That will put a LOT of leverage on the windshield...and should NOT be adjusted without precautions.

IF YOU NEED TO ADJUST THE ARM OF THE MIRROR...DO IT BEFORE MOUNTING IT ON THE MIRROR RISER...OR...SUPPORT THE MIRROR RISER AGAINST THE GLASS WHEN ADJUSTING THE ARM. DO NOT ADJUST THE MIRROR ARM WHILE ON THE MIRROR RISER W/O FIRST SUPPORTING IT...ESPECIALLY DOWNWARD...THAT PUTS A LOT OF LEVERAGE ON THE GLASS.

We are very confident that the Mirror Riser is very safe for your windshield. We have been running ours in temps from 2F to 109F, with balls and devices, on and off-road, for over a year and absolutely NO issues.

    More than I can afford
    Tom,
Nothing was mounted on the ball. I was waiting for some parts to adapt my drive cam to mount on it.
I cannot say for sure but I do not think I adjusted the mirror arm once I installed the riser.
Something that did cross my mind is tucking the connector for the auto dim/backup camera wiring into the headliner may have created some amount of downward leverage. The wiring is not especially long and as such, putting the connector under the headliner made it pretty taut.

The odd part is that the riser was in place for a week, essentially untouched without problem. During that time, no one else touched, drove or even sat in my truck, I am pretty confident that the mirror didn't move. Truck was driven ~400 miles during that time.

Got home from work, parked truck. Went out to the truck the next morning and it was cracked. Has not been especially hot or cold here, truck is parked in a covered space overnight.

With the mirror back at the stock location, the crack is covered. I plan on addressing replacement when I have the time/money or if the crack worsens to where it is in my line of sight or gets me a ticket.

Whole thing has just become a big, expensive disappointment. I liked the end result and the product was very nicely made, but I cannot chance having to buy yet another (shockingly expensive) windshield.

Well followed the instructions and I have the crack too...

If it helps with data collection I have a 2009 windshield.

That's the exact setup I went with. I received my riser yesterday and installed in less than two minutes. Seems to be a great product.

Installed my Clearview today after it was hand delivered to my office! Didn't realize we lived in the same town. Awesome product backed by awesome people! No obstructions in my line of sight now. Quality machined aluminum with a slick anodized finish. Would definitely recommend!

You can order it w/o the RAM ball and save yourself $7. A lot of folks buy them w/o the RAM ball.

Go to our website: BirdDawgIndustries.com to order

How easy or hard is the install for the mirror with the dimmer wire, should I just tape it black or stuff it in the headliner.

Sub for more feedback... I hate the mirror placement but if there's a risk of the windshield cracking I may just learn to deal with it

Id like to buy one of these with the ball mount but want to use it for a radar detector. Anyone doing that? Can i buy a pack for the ball mount with a couple cases/clips that might hold my radar detector or iphone6 on the ball?

Get them off ram mounts website, or Amazon like I did. Price point was better. Still a small fortune, but less than I found anywhere else.

My cell phone holder is a modified Nokia wireless car charger holder. I removed the sticky suction cup base with a screwdriver. Then using a die I threaded it to quarter inch 20. I did that knowing that RAM already had a ball for sale on their website that would take those threads. After that it was simple. Run the wire and adjust the swivel of the articulating arm. After having this dual ball mount, I think I might just buy another one of the extended thread Ram balls. That would allow me to go back to a single ball on the riser. And the ball would take the place of one of the screws on the articulating arm.
