Third batch of 05+ steel tailgate reinforcements

There was a lot of interest in another run of tailgate reinforcement plates from this thread:

Much like last time:

- Deposit of $20 can be sent to hoffmandesigned@gmail.com
- As soon as I receive 10 deposits I'll put the order in for a batch of 10.
- If we don't reach 10 by 4/30, I'll refund everyone's deposit.

The total cost will be $150 + shipping. How much is shipping? This depends on the location. With the last two batches the largest shipping charge within the 48 contiguous states was $50. Most of the time it was between $25 and $40. If this is a concern for you please send me your address and I can give you a quote. Or, if the cost of shipping is above $50 when it comes time for the final buy and this changes your mind, I will completely refund your deposit.

Wow! Just got word from the machine shop that the tailgates are complete and will be ready for pickup this afternoon! I asked them to rush them so I could pack over the weekend and ship on Monday, and they did.

Any idea on shipping to Canada? T3B 0L6…Just wondering…could a few cutouts be made to lower the weight?

Shipping to T3B 0L6, Canada is $68. Not bad, actually.

Just for curiosity's sake I got a shipping quote on a tailgate that was half the weight, i.e. 20 pounds. This only dropped the cost of the shipping by $22. For lower cost shipping, i.e. the usual $30 range, this would only drop it by $12.

However, the cost of making these cuts would be added to every tailgate, increasing the machining cost. Futhermore, that's an optimistic analysis assuming we could remove HALF the weight.

Shipping to Santa ana is $22.

is the best way to use the tailgate WITH the plastic/composite tailgate still to use a flap-disc and grind away the edges (as noted in the other thread) ?

Or is there a possibility of editing the design to have this width (or lack there of) accounted for ?

 

The combined shipping for 2 is $108, not a dramatic reduction, but I'll round it down to $100.

 

I'd prefer not to change this design at this moment as they were designed to be a replacement. In other words, if I reduce metal now those that want to use the plate by itself will have no way to add the metal. But for those who DO want to use the stock cover, too, can easily remove the metal.

 

Completely understand. Plus, it's just another reason to use my angle-grinder

Never worked with metals, how hard would it be to grind away the couple mm's to make the stock cover fit? Also what kind of tool would I need to use/purchase?

 

Sorry for the delay in responses, was doing a lot of driving over the past few days.

Shipping to Lexington is $58. I'll round it down to $50.

Having not done this myself, I'm just repeating what others have told me. I believe that other only a few mm need to be removed, and they've been successful with a flap wheel.
