I noticed. We're getting there, vendor is killing me on the first order. Once we get the first order out of the way it should be smooth sailing from there.

not to be a debbie downer, but a single flat piece of sheet steel / aluminum is pretty much going to add nothing to strength the way its needed in this application. , not much more so than the composite peiece that it replaces (that actually has some bends in it to make it more rigid).

In OP's defense, (Though your example is true, and bends do always add strength) it's not realistic to put that many bends in it. I believe the most you could do would be a one fold down on each side and, of course, however far you want to roll around the top. Is there a formula relating to the strength added with each bend?

Secondly, does anybody know the limiting factor in the system? Cables, skin, internal stands?

The reason I have not yet gone with the Relentless one is that I want to be able to maintain my OEM Tailgate cap. If either guy can fabricate a reinforcement that has the bend over the cap (for added strength) but allows the original cap to fit over it I'm in.

I've read the tailgate max load is 200lbs but that is because the truck tailgate is flimsy. I believe the rating is true though considering I (260lbs) climbed into the the truck and popped a bunch of spot welds before I put the metal on. Now I know everyone wants steel with bends so they can use their truck as a truck but I still wonder what people are putting in the beds to justify needing some tailgate that'll support a Sherman tank. I climbed onto the tailgate after I bolted the metal skin on and was jumping up and down trying to destroy it with no luck. I saw someone did bend a tailgate with a Harley but how many Harley owners are throwing 800lb bikes into the bed of a truck? Most trailer them for convenience and safety (dangerous as hell driving a bike up a ramp into the bed). I am thinking of weighs to change our design to increase strength without adding bends all over it. I'll keep you all posted.

    #1) why

#2) the factory cap mounts with push in pin style connectors I'm not sure would work after you included the thickness of the reinforcement , and the reinforcement top would need to be riddled with holes to accomidate the pins

    3) why

You are correct, in most situations, however...

It appears in this application that bolts are used to secure this flat piece of metal to the tailgate. While flat steel is not as strong as corrugated steel under compression, this product works under tension. Assuming the tailgate will take a load when in the down position, weight on the tailgate (force) would be applied perpendicular to the plane of the reinforcement. Thus, a load will try to flex or bow the tailgate and reinforcement in the direction of the force. This force will run through the reinforcement, putting the piece under tensile stress, and the bolts under shear stress. Assuming each component can handle the stress put on it, it should be fine. Steel's Young's Modulus is around 29 x 10^6 lbf/in^2, which means that it takes a very large stress to elastically deform it to any significant degree.

The point: if the bolts hold secure in the tailgate frame, this product shouldn't bow with anything our trucks can carry. You would probably bend the tailgate frame or break the side cables first.

Well, that pretty much invalidates the point of the argument then. The reinforcement wouldn't fail per say, but it wouldn't effectively protect the tailgate either.

This must be the reason the force must be carried under compression; relying instead on the side cables and frame to support the load and the plate to handle the direct pressure.

If the skin reinforcement is used in conjunction with the tailgate cap, is that issue eliminated?
Good posts, answered my question. Why delete?
