Vibration @ 30-40mph after 5100s installed @ 1.75

Anyone experience driveshaft vibration after installing bilstein 5100s set @ 1.75. I had these installed professionally and the ride great but I have a very mild vibration that I think is from the driveshaft when I am doing 30-40mph. My truck is a 06 tacoma TRD offroad 4x4 dbl cab. Any help would be appriciated.

 

Got an alignment and the truck drives straight and probably better than before but the vibration feels like its a driveshaft problem or something else. Wheels dont shake, steering wheel doesnt shake its just a low virbration at 30-40mph. seems also almost like its in 3rd gear at that time until you hit just over 40mph and the truck shifts at that time and the vibration is gone after 40mph. I havent driven it above 65-70mph yet and dont know if it occurs then.

 

^ I just had the exact same thing done to my truck. I have the rear toyota AAL, w/ front 5100's installed at 1.75. I had an alignment done when the 5100's were installed. It pulls straight and the tires have about 30k on them. My vibration is at the exact same speed. 30-40mpg. Its a slight vibration, but still noticable. I would like to know what it is as well.

 

One other thing that comes to mind is if anything has been done to the rear supsension? I had the TSB done to the rear springs and it raised my rear approximately 1 1/2". According to the folks at Deep South, they recommended setting the front Billies at 1.75 to level out. If nothing has been done to the rear, you may want consider lowering the front. to .85 or do an AAL to the rear. Mine is smooth as silk.

At the same time, I had some Hankook tires installed. They balanced them on the inside of the wheel. I do remember getting some slight vibration. Took them back and they placed weights on inside and outside and the vibration went away.

 

I'm wondering if I should have the front lowered to 1.25 instead of the 1.75

 

there is no setting at 1.25 on the 5100s.

I have mine set at 1.75 and have the rear spring tsb done to the rear. no vibrations at all.

 

x2, my exact set up and no vibrations. This is strange because the consensus is usually vibes start at 2.5 and above. I am sure you have double checked this, but are you sure you are at 1.75 and not 2.5?

 

like others have said get some shims from toytec. or do the washer fixeroo, like I did.

 

Yeah I'm sure they are are 1.75 not 2.5, its the second notch down. I ment to say .85 not 1.25, sorry. My vibs feel like there are in the front end not the back. I can feel it in the wheel and the pedals.

 

Before you take any advice on installing this or that, be sure to see if the vibe goes away when you put it in 4wd. Post back on the results. For your sake, I hope it doesn't go away because that's a costly repair (front diff replacement). Been there, done that.

 

Ok i put it in 4x4 and didn't notice the vibrations as much. When I took it back out of 4x4 I still didn't notice the vibs. I dunno, I'm going to take it back to the place that installed the 5100's and see what they say. When you stand about 25 feet away it looks as if the bottom of the front tires are closer than the top of the tires. they dont seems to be straight. When you jack a car up and the tires go down, this is what it looks like. All though not as bad but it is still noticable. When I checked there work it seems as if the disconnected my front tie rod ends for some reason, i'm wondering if its back on correctly.

Well, does your vibe go away in 4wd? (see my previous post)

 

What does this mean? If you put in 4 wheel drive and vibration for a away, what does that mean. And why would this occur when truck lifted. I will try this though in any case.

 

Can it be a drive angle thing?

 

I did put mine in 4x4 today but only in the parklot at work. I haven't noticed any vibs afterwards, even without being in 4x4.

The 05+ Tacomas have the same problem with the front differentials as the newer gen of Tundras where the driver's side bearing (in the front differential) goes bad over time (Tundra's at least have a TSB on the problem and people are going through as many as 3 new front differentials in a short period of time). If the bearing is bad, you will eventually hear/feel it with the front axles at stock-height angles. But if the bearing is going bad and you can't yet hear/feel it at the stock height, changing the angles of the axles (front is lifted a little) will definitely cause the bad bearing to manifest symptoms (because the front axles are now putting more pressure on the bad bearing at their new angles).

The "tell-tale" sign that the front differential bearing is bad is that the vibe (and grinding sound if bad enough) goes away the minute you flip the switch to 4wd. This vibe/grinding can be felt between 20 and 50 mph if bad enough. If it's not very bad, the speed most tend to feel it is closer to 35-40 mph.

So the first test anyone should do when experiencing a vibe after installing new shocks or any sort of lift to the front end, is to flip the switch to 4wd and see if it goes away. If it does, diagnosis complete: Bad bearing in front differential. If it doesn't go away, you've now eliminated this common, costly problem.

 

So if the front diff is bad does the noise go away when you take it out of 4wd?
