Why sway bar?

    It was suggested to me today, during a front lift install, to leave the sway bar off. Having very little automotive engineering knowledge, why?
    What are the pros and cons?

    you'll have better articulation, but it'll ride different you would have to get used to it

    I personally - would not recommend removing it or disconnecting it for driving on the street. It's there for a reason and if you ever get into a panic situation and have to swerve quickly, having that sway bar intact could keep all 4 wheels on the ground.

    In that same situation - without a sway bar - could cause a roll-over.

    If you do any offroading - you can disconnect it for offroading as it allows the suspension to move more freely. Re-connect it for your drive home.

    Pro: More wheel travel (articulation).

    Con: Less stability on the pavement, increased chance of a roll over.

    I do not have my sway bar on my truck. It feels perfectly safe on the street, although it does like to lean a little in corners. What coil overs (shocks/springs) you're running up front will come into play in how the vehicle feels.

    If you don't know what it is or what it does, you're probably not ready to take it off. When you need more wheel articulation, you'll know it.

    I love to see the flexing. Didn't realize that was related to the sway bar. Thanks for elaborating guys. I'll try it sometime just to see how it feels.

    I had my sway bar removed when I was running Icon coilovers. Truck drove nice with not much body roll. Then when I switched to Bilstein 5100, I noticed a lot more roll and lean in the corners. I reinstalled the sway bar and the truck handles great now. I actually prefer it on now.

    I just installed 5100's and ToyTec coilovers. Like I said, I might give it a try sometime soon.

    I would keep it on for street driving and remove if you need to on the trails. I have quick release swaybar on my JGC so it takes me a minute to go from having to not having. Best of both worlds.

    Camper top with racks, Custom fogs behind lower bumper. Interior LED lighting, Rock Lights, Hella 500s with upraged bulbs behind black billet grill, AAL, Front 5100s
    I removed mine with the 5100 install. There is a bit more roll, but the increased performance is totally worth it when you drive on rough dirt roads everyday.

    I could just disconnect the links right? Removing and re-installing the bar just for on/off road is too much work

    Wouldn't you have to fully remove the bar? Just disconnecting the links will make them flop around. Wish we had a quick release and something to latch it on to.

    I pulled mine off this past weekend and I honestly haven't noticed any difference in body lean and I take corners fairly hard, albeit not as hard as I did with it on just to be on the safe side. You can take it off and drive around town a bit to see how it feels, like others have said your suspension setup will affect how it feels too. If you have brand new springs it'll probably be pretty firm with or without the sway bar depending on the spring rate.

    Research online about 'Quick disconnects' - there are writeups on how to make your own quick disconnects. I had a set on my 96 that I bought from someone else who made the kits (he doesn't make them anymore).

    With quick disconnects you should not have to remove it, just disconnect it and go. You might have to tie it up to keep from loosing it, but that is not a big deal.
