Are 2wd Tacomas really built to handle offroad?

This is specific for base models (not PreRunners). And I'm talking about from the factory, not w/ installed lifts or mud tires.

 

With the factory LSD on the new ones, they're a lot better than other open differential 2WD pickups.

Our 2010 does a dang good job in light muddy ruts, slippery grass, loose gravel and soil, whatnot. Pretty much anything you might encounter on our flat farmland.

Would I try a mudhole, pile of boulders, or jumble of logs? Of course not.

Very nice. And yeah, i'm not talking about crossing rivers or climbing mountains, just the "outdoors" i guess you could say. I think when alot of people hear "offroad" they automatically assume anything that will showoff how their truck can climb over a ditch or clear moving water... i'm just talking basic, woodsy or dirtsy areas with terrain "fluctuation" as opposed to terrain "mutation".

 

They will do just fine on fire roads and the like, the ground clearance on the little 5 lugs is impressive for how short they are.

As long as the stream base is pretty solid, sure.

You have three things to worry about:
1) Water depth.
2) Water pace
3) Streambed quality.

Ours trucks across our foot deep gentle stream with no trouble at all, thanks to the reasonable water depth and slate/bedrock stream floor. I'll post a picture next time I have to drive out that way. (Our property is cut in half by a stream, ugh. It's very annoying. Haven't had time to engineer a bridge yet).

 

Well i figure maybe because the base model is a little lighter it might have a leg up on the heavier ones, but i dunno if that makes sense.

 

They're TRUCKS people!! If your scared to take them places where they might get dented or scratched or bogged down then you might want to get a blue Prius.

We used to have a 2wd stock basic 2 door Tacoma and it was just fine on fire road and things like that.

 

light offroading would be ok, if you plan to go offroad alot you should look at a prerunner/4x4 with the beefier suspension.

 

Still great clearance on the capable 2wd. I like the idea of turning a switch to make the front 2 weels turn

Az is a rock pit ....Tough dirt, sand and when it does rain here it all washes off into some DEEP fast rivers.

I think you'll be fine keeping to the offroad you are speaking of. These trucks are tough.

With proper usage of the pedal on the right you should do just fine.

But in comparison to the other production trucks in it's class, that are being built today? Hell YES!!!

This makes the most sense to me. The OP seems to understand that too.

They aren't going to put up great flexing pics and drive thru the stuff folks have with locked lifted 4x4's with winches...but they'll get you around. You have to decide for yourself if it's adequate for your goals/environment...

 

A good set of tires will do wonders for you. A stock 2wd with a decent AT on it will out perform a 4wd with those crappy duelers on there.

Driver experience counts for worlds too.

 

There is a thread on off road trails where they are rated by grades such as zero through five, etc. Just look at a trail and determine your abilities with the estimated grade.

No matter if its a Base, Prerunner or 4x4 Just know your trucks capabilities on or off road.
