Any of you guys running catch cans on your supercharged 4.0's?

We all know oil vapors into the manifold and throttle body reduces octane.
Higher crankcase pressures (from forced induction) can elevate this problem.

Are you running both valve covers into it?
I see you are not running it with a K&N breather.
How often do you drain it and how much does it collect?

BTW, it looks awesome...

Basically you re route the PCV hose into a collector that traps & collects the oil vapors & oil that would have ended up into the throttle body and intake manifold. Oil intoduced into the fuel mixture is a very bad scenario for forced induction engines. (Lowers octane)

These are very popular on supercharged mustang cobras and very simple to install.
There is a lot more crankcase pressure when you go forced induction.
IMO its a must do mod if go turbo/ blower.

Go to SVTperformance.com and do a search there is lots of pics
and examples of catch can set ups.

If you do not want to go with a catch can I ran these on my cobra. They did trap a lot of oil. Don't know if they will fit the taco's system...

Thanks for the info! So what you would do is disconnect the PCV hose from one of the two nipples on the TRD S/C housing, install a fitting and run hose to this oil catch can, then from the catch can back to the fitting on the S/C housing?

Any downsides to doing this? Do you think the oil that is recirculated to the S/C housing is supposed to lube the blower rotors?

I know first hand on the blown cobras with out catch cans there is a
TON of oil residue build up on the intake and blower turbines.

Granted we are talking about 550+hp vs 300+hp but the priciples are the same.


I see no downsides other than approx 6 extra ft of
rubber hose and a seperator mounted on the firewall.

Got to save the trees, not the rings and pistons

Think of CC's as engine insurance.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. kn38ms explained it well. The catch can gets connected in between the pcv and blower manifold. It's there to collect oil vapors from entering into your manifold and throttle body.

I bought mine from TTC who is a vendor over on XRU. Very nice can they make

Cool I ordered the one from TTC this evening. I kept searching for cheaper ones with baffles or some other filter to help the oil condense but they either didn't have them or had them but were $300.

Got mine in black Looking forward to putting this one in. I'll also take the top cover off the S/C and clean the intercooler. Not sure what I'll use to clean it though. I was thinking brake parts cleaner but I'm sure that would eat through the rubber/foam intercooler seal and the glue that holds it on.

I learned a lot from this little thread!

You're welcome. I kinda wish I would have bought black too. Are you sure you want to clean the intercooler? Seems risky to me. I guess it would ok if you stayed away from the seal.

If you're supercharged you need to run premium - the catch can won't change that. I'm guessing you're thinking that the statements that the oil vapors reduce octane so if you have a catch can the octane isn't reduced and you can run regular?

Yeah the seal is the big concern. I'll open it up and see how dirty it is. If its a very light film I'll wipe everything down and put it back. The charge air flow would clean it off I think. If its really heavy I'm thinking Windex or some other harmless grease cutter. Hopefully it won't be too bad - I've only got 1200mi on the S/C.

I bought a air compressor filter from Home Depot for, some 3/8" fittings, hose clamps, and 3/8" fuel line for around $25 this week and put together a temporary catch can until the one from TTC gets here.

I've driven less than 100 miles since I installed it and there is about a quarter teaspoon of oil in there already, so this thing does work!

Ebay for the oil catch can. For around 50 dollars you can get a real nice one. Also be sure to open it up and stuff some "Chore Boy" pot scrubbers. Its stainless steel and acts as surface area, you will trap more oil vapors that way. I did a write up, look from my thread on oil catch cans
