Does it make sense to go with the TRD O/R?

This is the first truck I have ever had with a locker. Having said that I will never own another truck without it, even if I have to do and aftermarket locker.

Of course most people will get by without ever needing a locker but having it is awesome when you need it. Locker aside I would choose A-Trac over my locker any day.

If you like the cosmetic options more on the sport then I would go with that. The sport edition does just fine off-roading IMO.;) You might regret it in the end cause a lot of people buy the off-road but then later down the road they want the color-matched parts and the hood scoop.

No front sway bar (does that count?)
I would agree. A 4x4 Sport is very capable and a 4x2 Sport can make it through some pretty rough stuff as well. Just ask some of the San Diego crew.

My $0.02....You like the look of the sport, you're going to lift it and get new tires/rims. Get it! A skid plate is a relatively cheap add on. Unless you plan on doing serious off road, then go with the sport. I never got stuck with my 90 yota. And I put that thing in places it had no buisness being. It'll build your skills.:D

I like your set up. If I could do it over, it'd just get a base 4x4 double cab model and use the money I saved for new wheels/tires and OME lifts. I really like the way black bumpers/fenders look, more rugged looking.

Get the Sport, chrome bumpers are for old men still living in the 80's IMO.

Really, I thought the sport had color matched bumpers & mirrors while the OR has chrome. The sport has 17" wheels while the OR has 16", the Sport has a larger sway bar I believe. The OR has a locker which is very nice off road while the Sport has LSD which does pretty well in most situations but not as off-road worthy as a locked rear end.

If you like I can explain A-trac & DAC to you as well.

jandrews I hope this helps you to better understand the differences between both models. I can't help you with your 80's mullet or parachute pants I just don't have the time to take that on.;)

Install isn't bad if you have connections. Especially on a forum like this.

I didn't read all of the replies, but all I can say is if you need a locker get the OR just because you can bitch at Toyota if it breaks, which it won't.

If you like the sport then get it. There are plenty of upgrades available for anything you might want to do to it: ARB locker (awesome), skid plates, bumpers etc.

I'm pretty sure Toy would make a killing if they made the Sport with ATRAC and a locker...

Good point I hope some one from Toyota is reading this.

is there anyway to "custom" order a Tacoma? Don't mind waiting to get exactly what i want.

Sure is. Many people do it. Just go to your dealer and tell them exactly what you want. Like you said though, you'll end up waiting longer and paying a bit more, but it's worth it if you can get exactly what you want.

Edit: I'm not sure they can put a locker in a trd sport if that's what you were wondering

If you get on some serious trails I would say the off road. If you like the look of the sport and do lighter trails then go sport.

I like the look of the off road better. I have seem sports get stuck on trails the OR went through. No one of the sports that got stuck as ARBs.
