50k service

So i just hit 50k on my 05 4x4 doublecab, Im going to get the tranny and dif fluid changed, and one of my friends told me to ask about running synthetic.

Is this a common change and is it good for either one? I know that if i started running synthetic then i would always have to run it.

Also, im going to change out the plugs. At what point does it benefit to upgrade your plugs from the stock ones you get from toyota? I have intake, headers, and a full exhaust... should i just stick with stock?

I messed up. I thought you were talking about running synthetic in your engine. As far as your diffs go, synthetic is also a good choice. It dissipates heat faster and can absorb more moisture than conventional oil. It also lasts a lot longer under normal operating conditions. Some people with the TRD Sport models with the mechanical limited slip have had issues running synthetic oils in the rear diff, but you have a TRD Off Road, so you will have no issues. I would run 75w90 synthetic in your front diff, rear diff, and tcase.

Stealership told me most of the major lubricant changes and tune up stuff was at 60K.

 

What tune ups are they supposed to do? I figured id do it now, I have had the truck since it was new and i obviously dont drive it very much because i work in the middle east. So figured id do the lubs after 5 years.

 

The v6 engine spark plugs are actually supposed to be replaced every 30k.

If you have an LSD diffy use search and check out the problems people have had using synthetic even when using the special LSD additive. Even though some have had luck I've read-in a more than just Tacoma forums-where a lot more had problems than not.

There is no real 'upgrade' from stock plugs, they are pretty good just don't last long. You should change sometime before 30k...if you wanna upgrade get iridium or platinum plugs and go 60-100K before needing another change.

 

Running synthetic fluids (for most applications) is a good thing. I run redline synthetic fluids in the diffs and t-case. I also switched to denso iridium plugs with no problems.
