When has the Short Bed failed you?

When has the Short Bed not been adequate, making you wish you had the Long Bed? Any real-life examples you can think of? Appliances, Furniture, Beds, etc.

I'm so accustomed to the Long Bed...

 

That's what I'm talking about.

I haul a lot of stuff in my Long Bed, not noticing how much extra space is left over. I might be up for a rude awakening switching to a Short Bed.

 

So don't do it.

 

I have a bed extender with my short bed so I really don't have any problems.

 

The shortcomings (LOL) with the 4' bed that I had was the first time I had to move a john-boat with my buddies 2x cab short-bed gen1 and the fact that I couldn't sleep in the back, and fishing rods and long-boards required a roof-rack.

Otherwise I love the look of the 2x-cab short bed, but for my needs (boat hauling and sleeping platform) it doesn't cut it.

It is. I have only found my short bed being too small while trying to carry lumber, but at harbor freight you can get a bed extender for your trailer hitch for $29.

 

Looks like I am already half in the bag.

 

If you have a long bed, you can also get a bed extender. Long bed is always longer, a bed extender can't make up for it.

Now that's something I didn't think about.

5 foot bed = no more camping in the bed of the truck. If only I was a short Asian man.

 

I feel like people make such a huge deal of the difference in carrying capacity between the short and long bed, some going as far to declare that a short bed "isn't a real truck". The long bed is only a foot longer. I can't think of many things that would fit in 72" that would not fit in 60" of length. One can always drop the tailgate.

 

It's kind of annoying that I can't lay a mountain bike in the bed with the tailgate closed without turning the handlebar/front wheel of the bike.

BUT... for me that's a small price to pay for having WAY more options to parallel park in the city and shorter wheelbase for wheeling...

 

I heard about a guy who bought some lumber, put it in his Short Bed, then drove home. The lumber must have been really long. <that's what she said> Anyway, he goes to back into his garage and tears the shit out of the garage door. The lumber, propped up on the tailgate into the air, is at a steeper angle with Short Bed trucks. He didn't take this into consideration and the lumber didn't clear. $1000 mistake for a new garage door.

Not a problem for me, no chance in hell any vehicle fits into the garage.

 

me too...I have a short bed and because I have the bed extender I haven't had any issues....

But I really think the short bed vs. long bed is a silly question. I see it asked on the forum a lot. It's like asking what do you think I'll haul in the future, or do you think I'll ever park my truck in a place that could be tough to back out of and wish my truck was shorter in length? No one can really answer that for anyone else.

For me, I bought my truck for the configuration that I'll use most often...not the exception. Either way you go there will be times you'll wish you had the other configuration but regardless of which one you get just having the truck is handy---and a lot of fun.

 

My four wheeler fits perfectly inside the long bed with the tailgate closed. Thats what i was after when i got it. i didnt want to trailer my quad around. with the short bed it would be sitting on the tailgate. I dont trust these tailgates enough to support 500lbs bouncing around on it. But i like the double cab short beds.

 

I think the price difference in the short and long bed is ~$500. So I went with the short bed since it looks better and bought the bed extender. The bed extender pretty much allows you to transform your short bed into a long bed. So you'll have the best of both worlds.

We may be able to dream up some scenario in which the short bed w/extender is not as good as a long bed but those scenarios would come rarely and I haven't experienced any such scenario.

 

I had some issues fitting our bikes back there with the tailgate closed. I slept back there once but had to bend my legs (I'm 6' 2"). Commonly lumber is in 8 ft lengths so the long bed won't help much. Once I needed some 2x4x16 and had to thread the lumber through the back window all the way down to the front passenger foot area .

I still don't mind the short bed as I like the increased maneuverability.

 

Im with u on this, my brother got a 2009 access cab and argues the fact that having the extra foot is worth it over my dbl cab. At least I have a backseat
