Bike rack with roll up tonneau?

I have a DC short bed and it has become a pain to toss my bike along with my wife and sons in the bed......

Anybody else? My Tonneau cover has a lip along and inside the top bed rail which may be problematic??

 

I'm thinking about mounting some towers on the side caps of the bed w/ cross bars so I can mount the bikes over the bed and keep the tonneau cover closed. That way I can still put gear in the bed.

Currently I have two forks mounts mounted to the bedrail at the front of the bed. when I added my access roll up tonneau cover I had to install some washers to space it out a little bit to clear that cross bar.

 

I use a Thule hitch mount rack so I don't have to roll the tonneau up at all. It's a decent rack but I would recommend swapping out some of the hardware. As it comes from the factory, you need tools to put the thing on and remove it and there's no way to lock it to the truck without purchasing their locking pin. I swapped out some of their bolts for codder pins and drilled out the mounting hole to accept a standard trailer pin. Not sure about Yakima but I would imagine they have a similar set-up. But, if you want to haul bikes without having to roll up the tonneau, hitch mount is a great option.

 

I thought about doing that with mine but then I have to take it off and put it back on everytime I ride the bike. I have about 4 inches of clearance between my truck and the garage door. Last week I made the mistake of leaving my Hitch ball mount in the reciever and I closed my garage door on it....The garage door lost that battle.

 

Ouch. I park outside so don't have that problem. Another idea is permanently mounting those fork adapters to your bed. I'm not sure how much you ride or how many other things you typically carry in your truck. If you're not into mounting it permanently, you could always mount it to a piece of plywood, or a 2x4 and strap it down (the Tacoma beds are already nicely notched to accept a piece of lumber above the wheel wells). Not sure if that would work but it could be quickly taken out when you're not using it.

 

I already have those fork adapters mounted to my bed. The reason I wanna add a rack across the top is to I can keep my tonneau cover closed and mount the bikes on top. That becomes useful especially when going camping, all your gear can be put in the bed and the bikes aren't in the way.

Anyways I feel like we have stolen the OP's thread lol. Not sure if he has the same issues as me but it seems like he's trying to accomplish the same thing.
