I'm looking to buy a roof rack for my 2010 double cab for hauling my 17-foot Mad River canoe (about 75-100 lbs). Needs to be sturdy enough to make long trips (e.g. San Diego to Oregon) and not too noisy.

First, will a roof rack provide enough support for this purpose?

I think I read in another thread that the factory racks couldn't take the weight of a smaller canoe.

    Preferences between Yakima and Thule?

Recommendations for a good shop to purchase from in San Diego?

    Thanks for the help.

    Cheers!

Yakima and Thule are both great. You really can't go wrong with either. I wouldn't recommend any other brand except those two. Not sure if you want to do this or not but a camper top is an excellent platform for a roof rack and you can slide the Mad River up on the back by yourself.

    My setup:

    Thanks for the info.

I'm not planning on getting a camper (at least not anytime soon), so I'm really looking for advice on the roof rack on the double cab. I'm a little worried that the canoe may not ride so well being so far forward on the body of the truck.

I just remove the Yakima system from my DC because we have expanded past the number of kayaks and sailboards it will hold. For 2 side by side it works great. I ended up making a trailer for all our needs (3 kayaks, 2 sailboards). If you are interested in a Yakima, I am going to sell mine now.

I have the factory roof rack. I haven't had a chance to even take my canoe yet (moved into a new house, went away on holidays, etc) but I'm certain this thing is sturdy enough. It's rated at 100lbs. I'm pleased with the look and the installation of it. Very simple to install, its solid on the roof as well. I'd prefer this then clips but if i had a top I would have that setup in the above pic. It looks great

I have a thule on my DC. It carries the weight of 3 kayaks fine, but their lengths are only 12'. You might have to go with a a Goalpost off the hitch to manage the Mad River's additional 5' imo.

That's how I am working it, a singly Yakima bar across the cab of my truck and a goalpost bar coming up from the trailer hitch for the back.
