Added space in my Short Bed Double Cab

After driving long bed Ford 4X4s since 1977, I recently bought a Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off Road a couple of months ago and quickly found on several fishing trips that I was running out of space to store my gear. After several stops at remote ponds, the fly rods would be tangled with the other gear... what a mess!

So, I put a couple of 2X6 across the bed in the slots provided, cut a piece of 3/8 plywood to fit and covered this with indoor/outdoor carpet. This effectively gave me twice the floor space to store items in the Short Bed. The fly rods and paddles are stored safely in the lower level, along with a plastic container filled with my tow ropes and comealong. The top level easily stores the rest of my gear.

The attached photo is prior to leaving to pick up some friends and head to the Allagash area in Northern Maine for the week. With their gear stored, the back was filled to the brim and we got everything in we would have in my long bed Fords!

I did something like that in my 1st generation but put plywood along the ridge where the cap meets the bed... Then I drove from RI to Alaska.......had all my gear stowed underneath and slept on top all the way..

One of the best trips of my life....

I did that on my old Ford Ranger. It worked great! I'd stow gear under the plywood and sleep on top. I cut it down the middle and was able to open it from the sides or move 1 half out of the way if I needed too.
