I'm happy with the 1GR-FE, BUT, I wouldn't mind seeing Toyota offer an optional V8 engine in the Tacoma. That would be pretty cool.

The 4 Runner's new 270hp motor would be the same as the dual vvti option btw....

As for me personally... either an improved hilux diesel or an improved 5.7L V8. The difference in power stock on the 5.7 doesn't really justify the jump right now as a supercharged current 4.0 almost matches it....

i always loved dodge for their habit of putting big engines in their vehicles so i bet if toyota put an optional V8 (even the 4.6), itd be a big hit for those looking for that extra power in a smaller package that dont want to have their powertrain fall to pieces by 50k (hem hem dodge)

I would really like to see a diesel in the Tacoma, but unfortunately think that is a long ways off. Hopefully VW and Audi start the small displacement diesel trend in the US and Toyota catches on. Realistically, a V8 in the Tacoma would be a nice option. I think the added weight and torque would make the Tacoma much more comfortable for towing and hauling.

They had to, their "compact" pickup was heavier than everyone else, and their V8 made V6 numbers.

As for their drivetrains falling apart, you're on the money on that one.

As for the Tacoma, putting the 4.6L V8 in there would result in a wonderful vehicle configuration. It would be like the previous gen V8 4Runner (which the Taco has the same transmission) but without the extra bloated weight and with more power. The 4.0L V6 is already competitive with other offerings in the class however, and the Taco so far outsells its competition that Toyota has no impetus to offer a more powerful engine. Look for the dual VVT-i 1GR to show up in the redesign, but no V8. They don't want to cannibalize Tundra sales.

People wanting the 5.7L in the Taco apparently don't understand how badly it would fuck up the vehicle dynamics. The truck would be very nose heavy and the drivetrain is in no way prepared to deal with those kinds of forces. There's a reason Toyota had to design a new transmission alongside the 5.7L - it's prior V8 tranny (which we have) can't take those forces. The 5.7L would result in a vehicle that handled poorly, drank gas, and twisted itself apart from the inside. The 4.6L makes supercharged 4.0 power without all the disadvantages of supercharging, and it's not much heavier (it may even be lighter, being that it's an aluminum block) so it wouldn't dick up the handling and weight distribution.

i disagree. an all alluminum engine is only going to add 150 pounds or so to the front end. yes, you need a beefed up transmission to handle the power, but that's not going to add much weight. if you wanted to balance it out a bit more, you could go with a rear mount transmission, although that really would only be an optioin if it was a 4X2.

I would say the 4.6L V8 would be good, but a 6sp auto to help with gas mileage when on the highway would be good too. (of course a 6sp manual geared differently would be even better and include that option in the DCLB!)

I agree, i really think the tacoma has a great stock engine right now. I mean hell, when i first got the truck i was amazed at how quick it was. I beat my friends 1999/2000 RAM 1500 with my truck :D.

Thats a good point with the tundra, however due to frame differences wouldnt the tundra 4.6L still be able to tow more more than the tacoma with the same 4.6L engine?

Oh and does any one else feel as if, we can get more than 238-240HP (according to toyota's specs lol) out of the 4.0L V6?

I think 4.0L is pretty big and there could be more than just 240HP there. Its sad, my friend's mom has an Acura RDX I4 turbocharged and produces the same amount of torque and horsepower as our V6 :(

If you drop a 5.7L V8 into a Tacoma and expect the current transmission to keep up, you're correct, it won't work. Obviously there would be some enginering that would have to go into putting an engine that large into a small framed vehicle. Gas mileage may not be as bad as you'd think because the truck itself is so light. That engine wouldn't be working very hard at all although it would be hard to keep your foot out of it. Also, if you use your truck to tow/haul frequently, the added weight and power might be a welcomed addition.

They should make the 4.0L standard for all trims with auto, 5 speed and 6 speed transmission options. The 4.6L V8 would be the optional engine with an auto transmission. Even the Regular cab would benefit from the V6 power.

Lots of people like the 4cyl though for its low maintenance costs and crazy durability. What they need to do is make the taco a small sized truck again, no more of the enormous "midsize".
