Rear leaf squeak

As many of you, I had acquired the nasty rear leaf squeak. I fixed mine the other night when installing my rear 5100s, and wanted to let you all know how. I put some grease around the bracket (?) that holds the leafs together and then beat the pee out of the bracket because it looked like it had shifted out, or opened up and wasnt holding it as tight as it should be. After this hardcore beating from my mallet all is well and not a sound out of it since. I could make the leaf squeak by just moving them a little force with my finger. Now they are quiet as a mouse.

 

Let us know how long it lasts... all 4 of my clamps squeek... white spray grease lasts 3-4 days and liquid wrech lasts about 5-7. If beating them tight is a cure I will do it.

 

The best solution is new silencer pads. Leaf spring shop did my Tahoe for $50. Best money I ever spent.

 

But its not the leafs that squeak against each other its the clamps... do the pads stop the clamp squeek?

 

A little spray of multy-purpose lubricant between the leaves took care of my squeaks. I did it a few months ago and it hasn't squeaked thus far.

 

i got a feeling that tighting those clamps make it so the leafs cant move so therefore wont squeak. ive heard that the best solution is to take apart the leafs and put a bicycle innertube inbetween each leaf

 

If you are still under warrenty, there's a TSB for it. They just replace the friction/silencer pads but it's pretty good. The squeak came back after a few days in the mud but went back away with a car wash.

 

I did this too, but it was still squeaking until I lubed them up with some Mobile 1 grease and commenced to beat the snot out of the clamps.

The leaves need to move so the suspension can articulate. The metal to metal contact between the leaves causes a majority of the squeaks hence the silencer pad tsb.
