How do you like your 180? I just ordered mine. Can't wait to head for the mountains for some camping. Also got one of these coming: http://www.truckairbedz.com/store/1...95-Present-AirBedz_Truck_Bed_Air_Mattress.htm Will mostly do tent camping with the old lady, and have the topper for dry storage, and airbedz as an on the fly setup for when it's just me an the dog. I like options!

MSCOFF's setup is pretty nice with the Leer 180 (which I have also, and is nice for head clearance, and fits in the garage). MSCOFF also said he has the SUV/truck tent that has a boot that fits around the rear end of the truck with the tailgate and the topper's rear window open.

I have a Cabela's similar to that, it's pretty nice. It's a regular 8x8 tent with floor and windows, but a huge opening at the rear that you put around your truck behind the rear tires. Dang nice and about $300.

For the bed I put a 4x8 sheet of finished 1/4" plywood in with cutouts for the wheel wells, same as I did with my Gen 1. I'll use the extra 2 ft for the tailgate, and use 1/4" aluminum bar underneath to anchor the plywood to the tailgate. And hopefully that strengthens the tailgate also. That tailgate is ridiculously bendable, kinda pathetic actually.

I'll add in some thin rubber floor mat to seal the bottom/sides of the tailgate also when I anchor the plywood. I hate dust seeping in, I like a totally sealed bed. Same goes for those storage areas in the bed, sealed those already with weatherstrip.

I have had no problems with the Leer 180. It's about 6-7" higher than the standard Leer. That just about makes up for the height of the platform (9") I built which goes over the rim and fender wells of the composite bed. I took a road trip around the US this past spring (9k miles). The mileage was just the same with the cap stuff as without the cap. I probably should have gotten the fold down rear window for cleaning purposes, but neither the cap or cab slider got dirty enough to worry about. The price for the cap was about $1350 before tax. The OEM paint was about 99% perfect. So far I'm happy. One night I didn't want to set up the tent so I took my 12'x15' tarp. The 15' length went from the ground on one side up over the cap and down the other. The 12' length went from about 2.5" in from the end of the cap out past the back. Two poles and cords at the ends. Stakes and cords along the side grommets into the ground. Perfect for a quick evening setup.

We considered trailers like a pop-up, boler, a-liner, r-pod, because the wife needed more civility while camping - this thing beats them all imho.
Fast and easy to set up, roomy, cheap, and you can leave it and drive away, then back right in to place again.
Check out http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/ for some great camping set-up ideas.

I recently started making penny (alcohol) stoves and wood gas can stoves (top-lit downdraft gassification stoves)... has really added a new dimension to camping and backpacking. Google up some images, cool stuff.
Wifey thought I was nuts hoarding old cans ..... now she's promoting them and giving my creations away to worthy strangers we meet while camping. Instant Karma's gonna get me...

Desertrunner83. How did your "old" setup hold up? what do those pop ups weigh? Looks like a fun way to go!

Got my Airbedz today! Fits like a glove! Glad I'm not any taller. Should get my Leer 180 with the Adventure package and vented windoors tomorrow! So stoked!

Guys ive never understood the advantage of sleeping in the tent thats in the bed of the truck...what are the advantages and disadvantages? It seems like it would be a pain in the ass to take down if you had to drive the truck somewhere. Why not just setup a small backpacking tent right next to the truck? Is it really that much easier/better?

I am doing a cross country road trip for my honey moon next year and am thinking about a set up like this....

Keeps you away from the critters. Elevated camping tents such as RTT's (roof top tents) originated in Australia, where its imperative to not be sleeping on the outback floor, due to the number of poisonous critters. One of the reasons I built my M416 trailer, besides the fact that its cool, is for the exact reason you mentioned...What if I need to drive the truck somewhere? Easy, just disconnect the trailer and put the lock on the pintle so no one can hook up the trailer to their truck.

My old setup worked great. The truck had the rear TSB done and 5100's and the trailer itself was custom lifted and had larger tires. The trailer had a 25 gallon water tank and weighed about 3500lbs loaded. Towed fine, but when I got my dirtbike and put that in the rear of the truck the rear leafs really were not up to the challenge. If I kept it I would of upgraded the leafs or added airbags.

On the new setup the trailer/truck has a weight distribution hitch and I recently added firestone air bags since the trailer with bike weight close to 5000lbs.

The thin open cell foam air pads are all you need to take out the corrugation from the bed. I slept great for 2 nights!

I agree - because outside of paint all that can be done very inexpensively in comparison to their price tag.

Just got my Leer 180 with Adventure package installed yesterday. Overall, pretty pleased. Only 2 weeks to get. Do have one of the inside leds that isn't working. A couple of reveals around the windoors are tight. Very glad I went with the 180. Definately not too tall, plus the extra headroom will be very nice. And I think it still looks pretty sexy!
