Ok so I am looking to make a purchase soon on a 05 or newer tacoma with the 4.0L. I was doing some model research at edmunds.com when I read that...

"What's New for 2006 For 2006, a tire-pressure monitor is now standard on all Tacomas. Revised SAE testing procedures have dropped horsepower and torque ratings."

So I looked back at the 05' and is says it has 245hp and 283lb-ft or torque. The 06' and later show 236hp and 266lb-ft of torque.

My question is: Was Toyota generous with the numbers they gave? or is there a significant power change between model years?

Also has anyone used one of those 'bully dog' or the like; chips for their Toyota? I hear they make 'em for Gas engines but has anyone tried it out?

BTW I am hoping to get an extended cab 6cyl with 6-speed manual.

    Thanks.:)

There is no power difference between the 05 and newer models. The SAE changed the way engines were tested and rated, resulting in a drop in numbers. The engine did not change.

FWIW, on 91 octane or higher the 1GR-FE is rated at 239hp and 278ft/lb of torque.

The 4.0L is an adequate engine for these trucks. It is not "fast as hell" but it is exceptionally pleasant to drive with torque down low for hauling, towing, and crawling.

Please do not waste your money on some Chinese-made engine chip scam on ebay. They do nothing except put your expensive and exceptionally well-engineered motor at risk.

I have a 05 4Runner and an 08 Tacoma both have the 4.0. They are equally responsive when I put my foot into them. Only difference is the 4 runner gets 4-5 more miles per gallon.

Thanks for your responses. I was hoping that I didn't have to scout out a 05' I am wanting something newer.

As far as the chips though I am familiar with those cheap ebay units that connect to your air temp sensor and nothing like that would end up on any of my vehicles.

the reason I asked was that I had watched something the other day on Speed TV called Truck U where they were using a chip on Gas engine. It had a LCD screen where you would enter numbers into different prompts to change things like the rev limiter/ speed limiter / speedo ratio for different tire size and such.

    Hey Thanks again

Dont chip; tune. Tuning devices/software is pretty expensive, but well worth it if you're looking for power and reliability.

The only device I've ever found is this: http://www.aprpower.com/ECU_mainpage.html

Buy that and go to a reputable tuner near you, and get a custom tune for your elevation/octane/performance parts/etc..
