I don't know why you guys would use or recommend anything besides oil filter pliers.
I have never had an issue with, or have I ever failed to get off a filter using oil filter pliers. They are the sh*t!

You should try all alternatives besides putting a screw driver through a filter; if you fail with the screw driver you have nothing put slippery oil all over the damn filter.
A screw driver should be the very last resort, but can be effective.

I have d*cked around with all sorts of tools, nothing comes close to the pliers. Can be hard to use on certain cars or trucks due to size restrictions, but I have used them on my V6, will work for you.

I have always used this type of oil filter wrench. Fits almost everything from small hondas to huge filters on dodge trucks. Never failed. Best thing is it accepts the 3/8 ratchet or if you need more muscle I have had to use a 3/4 socket on my 1/2inch ratchet for the nasty tight ones.

    Snap-On makes this one.

I have done 3 oil changes on my truck and all three times I've used the screwdriver method. Here is what I think is going on. The filter from the factory and the instructions on the OEM filters state that you need to tighten 3/4 of a turn after it seats. I am not doing that anymore. I'm tightening it just 1/4 turn. I'm 3 weeks into my current change and the filter is still on with no leaks.

DSC01972.jpgThat day did just not go real well
Since I had already drained out the old oil and couldn't not get the filter off, I put the new oil in and with a thousand other things on my mind, I drove back to the auto store to buy a correct size filter wrench. It wasn't until I came out with the wrench and went to remove the filter did I realize that I had left oil fill cap off and laying on the engine. Of course it was no where to be found in the engine compartment. I stuffed a rag in to fill tube and drove back over my path. No luck. Called the dealer this morning and will pay $11 for a new one.

    BTW
that same day I was struggling with trying to get scratches out of my son's windshield after he used a scotch bright type pad to get dried egg off
That did not go well either.

I've used the screwdriver through the filter method for years. Just use a long screwdriver and don't pound it through the filter near the base. Once it's through grab both ends of the screwdriver and twist it off. A good strap wrench has since replaced this method. The cheap strap wrench are just a preliminary step on the way to the ER to get your knuckles bandaged and stitched up.

Maybe it's just the metal expanding due to heat.

Not sure what the manual says, but when putting a new oil filter on you need to lightly coat the gasket with clean oil, then thread and tighten the filter by hand. Do NOT use a filter wrench or any other item to tighten the filter on. Hand tight is all that is needed.

already had the powder (from a lapidary)
    ordered a 3" felt wheel
    was using a B&D polisher/buffing mach. - not enough pressure I guess
    we'll see
with the B&D I had tried:
    toothpaste
    baking soda
    polier paste
    polishing compound
    rubbing compound
    all to no avail
