That is pretty bad-ass. You re-inspired me to make a roof rack for my truck. A couple years ago I was thinking about buying an FJ roof rack and modifying it to fit the Tacoma but I like your design much more. I will probably make my rack next summer and steal your design.

Anybody have any thoughts on how to connectorize the wiring to the truck? I'm planning on either running the wires through the back window and only connecting when needed or running it through the 3rd brake light. I ran internal wiring (really thick stuff - 8 gage I think) and I'm struggling to find a waterproof connector.

Again, I already routed them out through the back of the rack, so I'm stuck there, and I want to make the rack easily removable, thus the need for a connector.

Dude. That's a nice rack. I love the low profile look, and the addition of the low profile rectangle lights that will fit under the air dam.

I actually thought of doing something very similar to my first gen after finding some similar piaa's at a yard sale for $10...but couldn't justify the cargo need.

What kind of tubing did you use and how much did it cost?

3/4" x 10' EMT conduit from Home Depot at $3.17 per stick I think. They may have been 12' I can't remember. I probably went through 5 or 6 sticks of it by the time I was done screwing up bends.

looks good. you might just want to think about laying down expanded steel over the bottom. i feel like any medium sized object or smaller will just end up sitting on your roof.

but good job, +1 for being original

Yeah, I've thought about that quite a bit. I might get a piece (or maybe two for easier storage) that I can just lay in there for the rare times it is needed. I was trying to keep it as light as possible and minimize wind noise. Easy enough to add though.

sadly, I've only put Husky Liners in it thus far - tend to blow all my cash on my bikes and guitars.
Did you ever find watertight connector(s) for the lights thru the cab??

I found a connector that works perfectly for my needs at West Marine. It is a 4 pole "trailer connector" that has rubber boots covering the connections. Not strictly waterproof but I think it is close enough for this application. I'm just running it out the back window when I need it which is less than ideal but easier than trying to run wires through the roof.

dude, ME LIKE. If you come up with a good prototype for the AC, I'd be interested in the frame. No lights but just the rack. Once again AWESOME!

Thanks 4 the ideas. Been MOD'n the roof rack for a while and your design has helped a bunch. AS people say this forum is great and it's worse than drugs for addiction and spending $$$, but ya gotta love it.

Would think it would be doable for the AC as well. Just need to pull the strips up and see if the mounting holes are there. If not you'd just need to weld some nuts on or something similar. This really isn't hard stuff. Pick up some conduit (cheap as hell) and a bender ($50) and get to it :)
