The bed extender cannot be removed if your tailgate is closed, so if you invest in a tailgate lock, theoretically you could leave it in there. I considered this, but when I looked at what would have to be broken to get it out with a locked tailgate, it was stuff that looked pretty easy to break.

I keep my BE in my apartment when not in use.

I got one but also installed the electric tailgate lock. No one can steal it (unless they really wanted it, it course.)

So I would suggest if you dont have a tailgate lock, its pretty easy for someone to steal.

I do but it is under a tonneau cover and also use a cable to lock it to the D rings. Cheap insurance.

My Dad has had a bed extender in his 2002 F150 Super Crew since he bought it new. No one has taken it, but he does live in a nice area.

X2 - that's enough where I'm from.

Ps - if you string the cable around the middle bar you can swing the extender in and out without having to unlock the cable.
