I would like to remove the door that covers the garage opener space. Is that something I can do more easily with the overhead console taken down?

Look in your manual. It's easy.

I've been through the owner's manual, and I'm quite sure it doesn't talk about disassembly. It just talks about installing a garage door opener and adjusting the button depth to hit the opener button.

I tried gently bending the door in the middle, but it seems like I'd have to bend it so far as to risk damage before either of the hinge pins are out of their holes.

I'm wondering if the black metal and the trim plastic can be easily separated once the console is down.

Probably get a better idea what you are up against if you take it down. You might have to push it to the left or the right to figure out which pin is shorter.

Yeah, looks like I'm stuck doing that anyway. It was worth asking in case anyone knew...could've saved me a few steps.
