So I'll be the idiot

I was at my shop last night and was changing the oil in the Tacoma, I had about 10 things going at the same time. I did not stop the last jug at the half mark so I actually put in 6qts of oil. What should I do? I dont want to try to drain just a bit out b/c if I cannot get the plug in I loose all the royal purple I just bought. I was thinking of just removing the oil filter and putting on a new one, that might get some of the oil out without loosing alot. What say you keepers of the Taco World! P.s. if I am worrying for nothing you can tell me that too, I just do not want to harm my new truck.

 

A half quart extra is not a huge deal, but I would try to get a little out. I would loosen the drain plug but not remove it. It should leak past at a rate you can control.
If you take the filter off, you might indeed have to replace it if you damage it in the process.
The last option I can think of is to get a clean bucket, drain it all and pour the proper amount back in.

I would hook up a drain line to the filter basin and just crack the filter loose a bit -- keep your eye on the drain pan below and tighten the filter back up once it's lowered a 1/2 qt. -- I've done this before and this remedied the problem fairly simply.

 

Ehh, dig around the forum for oil change nightmares. What you did is nothing!

 

Awesome I am going to trade out the oil filter. That should get rid of a quarter quart or so, I will not worry about that small of an amount, Thanks for all the quick replies. JOE>

I can see where that could happen. I have never seen that small of an oil pan I can see someone doing that. I mean I even looked twice to see what the crap was up under there. I ended up stopping by the Advanced auto to pick up a new filter, I figured that if I could get the amount that the filter holds out I would end up pretty safe. 1/2 qt wont kill you...

Just last week my buddies girl tried putting coolant in her car cause she was low (or at least thought she was). Yup right in the oil tank. Worst part was she drove it then to jiffy lube to ask what she should do... Dude just looked at her and shook his head.

Needless to say its a goner.

 

If it were me I'd definitely pull the plug and let some out. Too much oil I've heard can be just as bad as too little, but for different reasons.

This would also be a good reason to go fumoto.
