How many people out there have had the noise problem out of their front differential...lift or no lift? I am thinking about leveling my truck with front and rear Billies and maybe Eibach coils but don't want to have to deal with any bearing problems... It seems like some people have the problem without a lift too...

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
You shouldn't have bearing problems from lifting. If you develop them, it's because it was a pre-exsisting condition.

I had to get a new front diff... but who the fuck knows what the problem was... I kept burning up axle seals.

The dealer said the diff was chewed up due to lift (previous 3" lift, but I don't really believe them)

either way I let them replace the front diff and axles... it was free (warranty)

about a month ago... no problems now

I personally think that it was either a quality defect or the dealer fucked up the first axle seal install... but then again how did it fail in the first place?

The Dealer to fix it under warranty no questions asked... they even painted it as them doing me a favor

speaking of which I should go look under the truck...

there was popping sounds and leaking oil before... there hasn't been a single pop since the diff was replaced.... the funny thing is that my cv were fine, so I don't know if the lift caused the problem

    I am inclined to agree.

If lifting had a negative affect on the fornt diff, there would be a hell of a lot of more threads stating so. Second, the only reason people install a diff drop (and not everyone does) is to correct CV angles to keep the boots from wearing/ripping.

I agree... the only other problem could have been during the install of the RCD lift... we had to remove the front diff and the axles might have been at extreme angles during the install

    A few bolts are different.
I took the diff drop off my truck this weekend. The drive line seems smoother now. I used to get the pop all the time but I have not heard it since may :notsure: :knockonwood:

Agreed...sort of. The possibility exists that you have a bad bearing in the front differential right now (as was the case when people lifted the truck and got the front diff vibe). It's not that the lift caused the vibration, but rather the lift caused the bearing to manifest its true condition. If the bearing is going bad, you'll hear it at stock levels eventually.

Whether you want to deal with it if you lift it and find that you have the problem, that's your "make or break" decision. Only you can answer that question. It isn't a matter of odds where the poll gives you your answer. Personally, I would lift it sooner while you're still under warranty because then you can have it replaced on Toyota's dime (well, actually $2K). Waiting until after the warranty has expired to lift your truck is a mistake IMO because then you have to pay out-of-pocket for the defective part that was covered under the drive train warranty.

I've had a 3" lift (885's with 1/2" spacers) for about 40k miles and my front diff makes all sorts of terrible noises. In the end though, I have not wanted to remove my lift, nor would I not lift it knowing of the possible problem. Because it is such a rare issue I think its worth the risk.

It seems that the lift just sped up the bearing problems, but I think that it would still happen lifted or not.

Mine has been making noises for almost a year, and it hasn't gotten any worse. So to me it doesn't warrent replacing the differential untill the noises get worse. All I may do eventually when I can afford to put my truck down for a week is replace the bearings (along with CVs and wheel bearings and other suspension bushings)

Thanks for the replies folks! I'll probably go ahead and get the Billies and then save up for the coils!!! I have the rear leaf TSB done this Wednesday and I don't like the nose down look!

I wheel a little and use my truck as a large mountain bike - no problems with my front diff.

The pemise of this poll is a bit short - The idea of putting data together on this solely on idea of if it is lifted may be a bit short. If this included actual height, brand of UCA, tread pattern and mileage, if cv's a have failed, and if they used a 'diff drop' we may get a better insight.
