i try to fill up when i get to 1/2 a tank. i'm getting about 24 mpg with my 4 cyl reg cab prerunner. 75% city driving, i'm happy with it.

i am wondering why i couldnt find a reg cab pre-runner when i was shopping, i didnt even see anywhere that toyota made one? says on the toyota website that you cant get a prerunner unless it was the access cab, but, low and behold, i saw one at work the other day, and im seeing that people here have them, what gives? you guys know something i dont?

I get about 400 per tank of gas on the average...sometimes a little more sometimes a little less. I have made the conscious effort to leave a little bit earlier so I don't have to speed and dodge traffic. Now, whatever the speed limit is, that's what I drive, and it has definitely added mileage to my tank, not to mention I am less stressed out. I have a 2007 Double Cab

Maybe it's a regional thing? Toyota offers certain configurations in certain regions sometimes so who knows. Have you asked the dealer? I have seen a few around this area.

unbelievable. i get about 245-270 when low level light comes on. How could someone get high 300's. thats like a full 100 more miles per tank.

some guys are full of poop.. 30 mpgs and 27mpgs, yea right.. thats funny, keep on dreaming guys, obviously you dont know how to figure out mpg. cause the tacoma dc dont offet that much even at its best of stock truck.

let me post some stuff on here like the others that are obviously lying. I get around 400 mpg in city and 450-490 hwy miles.. awesome right. lol

it's most likely regional, some models are just not offered. 4x4 reg cab is not available in the southern california region. it also may be demand, when i got my truck there were only three with the SR5 option available in all of socal.

Not everyone posting results here is driving a V6 double cab. Here's my log data with someone else doing the math.





Efficiency log for: Tacoma
  • Fuel economy - lifetime: 25.16 mpg (US)
  • Fuel economy - last 3 fills: 28.18 mpg (US)
  • Fuel economy - 90 days: 27.77 mpg (US)
I'm expecting less on the tank I'm driving now because the heat has been oppressive and I've been stuck in stop and go traffic a few times.

My last fill-up, yesterday, was 425 miles, and I put 18.9 gal in the tank. So that's about 22.4 MPG

Roland, how are you getting these results? I have an '06 Access Cab I4 5 spd. Window sticker said 20 city 27 hwy. 80% of my driving is hwy, and I set the cruise at 70. I'm thinking my mileage should be much better than I am getting.

I'm blaming it on these crappy ethanol blended fuels which have less energy content than pure gasoline.

I think your prerunner might be geared a bit lower than the 5 lug 2WD trucks which could account for a couple miles to the gallon.

Cruise control is bad for mileage. If you have a steady foot you'll do 1 to 2 MPG better. (But if you're like my wife stick with the CC.) A scanguage is a great tool to train yourself to drive efficiently. It's amazing the difference slight changes in throttle position make.
I RARELY see the far side of 65 in RI. The speed limit is 55 and I usually do between 55 and 60 on my local highways. About 1/4 of my driving is on reasonably flat secondary roads where I manage to do 35 to 50 MPH which returns great mileage numbers.

Let me support Roland's gas mileage numbers! I've got the '08 4x4 version of his truck, and I'm getting 24 mpg average over the first 2500 miles (he is getting 27).

This type of gas mileage is very possible using careful driving technique, 35 psi in your tires (owner's maual says 29), and no other extra weight in the truck.

By the way, I think cruise control can help gas milage with a manual transmission, but can hurt it in an auto, because the automatic will do lots of shifting up and down to maintain the speed, whereas in a manual you can control the shifting yourself.

I had the same problem in my 2.7L AC PreRunner. The culprit - the 4.10 rear gear ratio. It is the tallest rear gear available stock on the Tacomas. That means great pick-up and off-the-line power, but terrible fuel economy.

In my 2.7L at 70 MPH I was cruising around 2,500 RPMs.
In my 4.0L at 70 MPH I am cruising around 2,000 RPMs.

I get better (consistent) fuel economy out of my 4.0L Double Cab Long Bed than I did out of my 2.7L (after installing URD True Cold Air Intake).

Yep, I agree. Cruise control in an auto is friggin irritation. In a manual it's smooth like butter, no annoying downshifts and what not.

in my neck of the woods, cruise control on an auto is great. I'm driving in all flat areas, so my truck never downshifts.

007 got me thinking, I'm going to take my K&N drycharger off at lunch. I've been averaging 21 mpg for the past few weeks.

Before my 2 mile commute changed to a 30 mile commute, my gas mileage was only 14 mpg. Now it is 21 mpg; think of all the money I'm saving now!
