Gotcha... Well in my truck, I do feel a difference and get better MPG's/power with a higher octane gas. Well worth the difference IMO. The EPA estimates that Toyota advertises is tested using 93 octane.

3 tanks is plenty of time for you to have felt a difference. Seems some trucks respond well with the switch to 91, while others report they dont.

Not sure if that's a legal requirement but they'll run like crap if they're tuned for 91. Older cars will knock and new ones will retard the ignition so much it'll run like shit.

I had to put 89 in the S2000 once when the only gas station open didn't have 91. It ran but was like driving another car, nasty, nasty.

Saying that, the Taco gets 87. At 1000 miles a week, the extra 20c starts to add up.

whatever man. both of those excerpts were pulled straight from the toyota.com owner's manual database. same page and stated different octane ratings. 05 said one thing, 07 said another. seems to me like it was dropped due to the new EPA testing standards that were put in place around that time. just looked and the 06 manual stated the same as 05, but not 07.

It's not new, it's not Mexico
Toyota states in the manual "select octane rating 87 ( research octane number 91) or higher".
The octane number on the yellow sticker is the Pump Octane Number (PON), it is the average of the Research Octane Number (RON) and the Motor Octane Number (MON). So:
    87 Regular has a RON of 91, 89 Mid-Grade has a RON of 93 and 91 Premium has a RON of 96.
An engine rated for 87 pump octane will not perform better with 91 pump octane fuel, but an engine rated for 91 pump octane fuel will suffer degraded performance using 87 pump octane fuel. Remember octane rating is a measure of a gasoline's antiknock property only. A gasoline with a higher octane rating does not burn hotter or cleaner, does not product more power, does not start quicker, and does not give better MPG.

Lol but isnt the 1GR-FE a high compression engine? I'd say 10.0:1 is pretty high :p

And i thought a higher octane would be better for higher compression engines? Someone correct me if im wrong...

I use VPower, too. Zero ethanol, plus all the detergents etc you get in premium, I consider it good engine insurance. I don't expect to feel a difference in my Taco (though I do in my Porsche). I get an average of just under 21 mpg (US gallons, that's about 25 mpg for us Canadians).

Friend of mine has a older Acura TL which requires Premium gas from the manufactorer, but he runs Regular for years in it no pings or Engine noises. I say run Regular in the Tacoma I do get 21.5-22 MPGs in a 3.4L engine with it.

My 2011 manual clearly states using 87 and do not mention ''better performance with 91'' anywhere. Only numbers are octane 87 and RON 91 or higher.

Does that mean that newer models are programmed to use 87 only?

I run 93 now since i've been seeing better mpg (18.8 has been my highest)
And so some people don't get confused on how a ecu works, I'm 99% sure the ecu has a more aggresive ign and cam timing maps that is called on when higher oct is used, giving more power and a more efficent burn. Sucks that toyota keeps there ecu's locked tighter than fort knox for no one to see:(
I'd like to see some 09-10 guys run 2 or 3 tanks of 87, log the mpg and then do the same with 93 and compair results and hopefully it'll yeild same results as the 05-08 guys .
