    It's not neccessarily more durable than paint, it's a totally different system altogether. You can think of gelcoat as being similar to the clear coat on your automotive paint, but it's not quite the same.

    With most modern boats being made of fiberglass, they are made using molds. That being said, most boats are "painted" before the actual fiberglass hull and/or other parts exist.

    The gelcoat is applied to the inside of the form used to make the various parts of the boat, and in many cases, it's clear. After the gelcoat is applied, the color coat is applied, and then the fiberglass is sprayed into the mold completing the molding process.

    When the fiberglass parts are removed from the molds, the parts already have the finish on them.

    not to hi-jack thread but...
    i am looking at buying a used leer & having it repainted to match..with leer being a gelcoat creation method, is that an issue?

    My Leer 100XQ is not gelcoat. It camed painted right from Leer.

    The local dealer cannot even submit an order unless they have your VIN number. Leer uses the VIN to match their paint up to the paint batch that the factory used to paint your truck. Mine is Speedway Blue. Avery hard color to match, and it came out perfect.
