I am about to buy a new tacoma...I was thinking a single cab or extended cab with the 4 banger...do the 5 speeds that come with the 4 experience the same problems as the 6 speed with the 6? My dad had an 07 with the 6 speed and it was so hard to drive smoothly and was a dog when it came to mileage...so I'm a bit concerned.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

I originally wanted to a 6 speed when I was looking for a used Taco. I found one and test drove it. It wasn't very smooth starting off, but I thought it would be better when I got used to it. Then I looked at the MPG rating on the 6 speed and found out it was rated at 2 mpg less on the highway. My commute is 160 miles round trip so I went with the automatic for that reason alone.

I agree with everyone else who says the 6-speed sucks as far as manuals go, but it didn't deter me from getting one over an automatic. The shifting is rough, sometimes gears don't like to mesh, and I think all six gears are a little short. As for the throwout bearing problem, my Tacoma will be traded in for a new Tacoma by the time the warranty runs out. I think some Redline MT-90 will smooth out the shifting, and maybe I'll go for the short shifter.

No issues with my 6speed. I love how low first gear is. Even with the 315/70/17s I can still just let out of the clutch real slow and get rolling. Then I just throw it in second and take off. I drove my dads auto Tundra for a few days when I was doing some work to my truck and I thought I was gonna go insane driving an auto.

edit- It also gets good MPG as long as you drive it like a truck, not a Corvette. I'm getting 17mpg since I've upgraded tires. Not all that bad IMO.

Love my 6-speed. I test drove both an auto and a manual taco when I bought mine. Shifts smooth, and the shift are nice and firm. The clutch took a little to get used to but now I love it.

I like having complete control of my vehicle, and what gear i'm in.

no probs yet. bullet proof. driven hard daily. beat corvettes off the line! so much torque in 1st gear. hard launching. love it. most of the probs that ever happen, ie-bearing, are easy fixes.
