Well, thats something I didn't think of. If you replace the DTRL with LED drop-ins, the turn signals wont work properly without a conversion kit.

Educate me .... why won't they work? They have the "wedge" connection. What am I missing here?

It has something to do with the LEDs current draw being that they're naturally a low power device compared to traditional incandescent bulbs. When I had LED bulbs in for the rear turn signals in my old car the front bulbs would blink really fast acting as if the rear bulbs were either not working or just not there when in fact they were working.

The LED bulbs with the wedge connection would work, but everything will just blink fast. The conversion kit should make everything operate properly though.

So ... with 2 bulbs at about $24 each and this flasher coming in at $20 .... we are looking about $70 to convert them to LED.

I took it to the dealer just this last week and they replaced the lenses. Let's see if this fixes things? Anyone know if they redesigned the lense?

    Thread necro +1

Search around the forum, there is a bulb that fits from GM dealers that is a bit shorter bulb and a bit lower watts; cooler and further away.

I have an 07 with 80K and just noticed it started about two months ago and then the bulbs went out on both the left and right. No cracking yet but melting occurred for sure.

My local dealer is working on this same problem with my '09. Trouble is that I am out of warranty. The service manager told me that Toyota is fully aware of this problem (but the dealership wasn't until I showed up.) Before I walked in I strolled around the lot and found an '09 in the used vehicle sections with the same melting. Apparently, there was a re-design in the 2010 model year and those are the headlight housings that are being used as replacements.

They've offer to split the cost of total replacement ($900+) with me, but we are also looking at a few alternatives.

I know it's not a solution. But I cut the wire to those stupid DTRL's a long time ago.

Ive had a unfortunate event with my DRL's now i have a whole lot of work to do to fix them. I think i might just purchase whole light assemblies unless someone has a drivers lense they want to sell.

So note to everyone before doing BHLM check DRL lenses for melting and replace if necessary before attempting.

For those of you wondering what the updated headlamps look like. Inner lens are no longer colored plastic but now glass.

Some melt and crack, some don't. The ones that melted was in a 2009 AC with about 60K miles. I'm not for sure but I think 3157 is a lower wattage bulb and may prevent the issue, it's just not as bright as the oem 4157.
