Changing Differential Oil?

I have a 2007 TACO PreRunner Double Cab, 4X2 WD.. Wanting to know..How do I know what type of Differential it has ( Limited-Slip Differential or the other one) and what type of fluid do I use..

 

no synthetic if you do NOT have a locker

 

I just did mine on my 06 Dcab TRD Sprt, but I think both rear difffs take the same fluid. I used the Lucas gear oil, I think it was 85W or something like that, just make sure you get the LS additive. The manual calls for 4oz.

thnx for all the information..guys..when reading Brian post..on changing the oil..at the very end..he said to "REPLACE THE FILL PLUG" is there a reason why it need replacing or could I use the same Fill Plug?.. I"m a newbie Sorry if I sound ignorance ...

 

It just means put it back in. No need to replace unless you really messed up the plug taking it off.

FYI: don't forget to remove the fill plug before removing the drain plug...you don't want to drain all the fluid only to realize the fill plug is stuck!

thank U..for stressing that info..I read where ppl had problems when forgetting to undo the fill plug first.. but I"m still confuse on the type of oil..going thru the manual ..it stated to use Hypoid gear oil API GL-5..and the recommended Viscosity for the Rear "Above -18 C (0 F) use SAE 90............ Below -18 C (0 F) use SAE 80W or 80W-90. If I"m reading this right... I"m suppose to use the SAE 90 because where I live the temperature does not fall below 0 F.. am I correct?? Please explain what the correct Viscosity to use..and how much do I need to Fill....

I don't think it's a lsd..from what I read from most of the post..I"m suppose to be checking for a label..and I"m still lost on the Lock ..what's the difrrent.... does a 2 wheel drive have lock or open?? I"m still trying to understand..sorry...for my ignorance...

 

If you live in california, arizona or the like, than SAE 90 is probably ok. But I personally chose 80W-90 for all temperatures. This means that it'll act like 80 weight in the winter and 90 in the summer...it splits the difference.

IMO the 90 is a lighter weight and primarily reduces gear drag (e.g. increases gas mileage, torque, etc), but by choosing a heavier weight, like 80W-90, you won't hurt anything, you'll just be lose that slight increase afforded by SAE 90...but it is negligible and you'll have the confidence of knowing your gear oil is right for any situation.

As for LSD...I'm not sure if the 2wd as a LSD, but your owners manual should say specificically what you have...if not in the specifications section, than somewhere else in the manual. Even the factory window sticker should say it.
