Break in period

Got 700 miles on my 2011 DC TRD OR 4wd A, and was wondering what the "real" break in time is. She runs great now and mileage is improving 16.5 on first tank, now around 19-20. Hell, even the valve tick or whatever that noise is even quited down some. So, how long would you say before she is good and initially broke in? Thanks

Guys there are many threads on here already about this, use the search function. But there are also many opinions on this too.

I would say that these motors really don't need a break-in (due to the fact that they make them so good nowadays), but there are many parts of the truck that do, plus it's always good to be on the safe side of things. I would have also recommended that you guys change your oil at 500 miles and filter.

I would say it's pretty much good at 500 miles, but I'd still take it easy until 1000 miles, and after that you can give it hell.

i've had several cars. Performance and daily and even 1 ( jeep srt8 ) i had 2x because the first i lemon'd. Every single time i break the car in hard it is a strong runner. Every time i baby it the motor lacks power.

I asked my dealer about the break in period when I bought mine and they said the same thing...break-in isn't much of a concern anymore with newer cars. However, he did suggest to take it easy on the truck up to 500 mi just for good measure.

 

I've always gone 1000 miles with any new car I've had.......... currently I'm at 700 miles with my 2010 Taco that I got 3 weeks ago....... can't wait til I get to 1000 miles so I can finally go on the highway!!!!

 

You do realize that city driving is a lot harder on your truck than highway driving, right? Staying off the highway for the first 1000 miles is not doing your truck any favors.

 

Drive it like you stole it from day one....thats the way I break my cars in

 

Not exactly city driving......... very few stop signs and traffic lights in my city..... generally 40-55 mph....... also the manual says not to stay at a constant speed while breaking in the truck

My approach has yet to fail me through a new Wrangler, Frontier, and Maxima

I have an 09 Tacoma 2.7L standard pickup and drive it to work 11 miles per day RT. I now have around 12500 miles. I can tell you there is a definate break in. The truck was kind of sluggish for the 12000 miles. Acceleration wasn't linear. When the throttle was pushed it would lag at first and then jump to high RPM and sound pushed. After 12000 miles acceleration feels more linear, the engine sounds better and the truck is more pleasant to drive. I feel it is still breaking in.

 

Beat that F'er hard from mile 1. The harder the better. IMO, the break-in period should be when you drive it the hardest. Then after a few thousand miles, change the oil and see what the gas milage is if you care.

I didn't believe in the break-in thing until I got my first used oil analysis back from Blackstone Labs. I am now a firm believer in the break-in, as well as getting your oil changed before the recommended 5k - at least for the first one or two changes.

My 2011 manual said not to tow heavy or full throttle before 500 miles

 

It also recommends not making any hard stops for the first few hundred miles too, I believe.
