Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
i went in today and was crunching numbers w/ a sales associate...then a sales manager....then the sales manager's manager....they initially only wanted to give me 16.5k for my truck and wanted 31k for theirs....even after showing them invoice and dazzling them w/ my tacoma know-how and intellect (hope i spelled that right...haha), they still would only go up to 18k on the trade and down to 30k for the 09 dc 4x4 sport. i might be back up there tomorrow to see what they can to on an 08...i just really like that timberland mica....mmmmmm. and i like the side curtain airbags and the vsc/atrac controls....but i can get 2k in rebates on the 08...so who knows...update again tomorrow

Work the deal on the truck you want and then tell them you have a trade-in, you usually get a better break for the trade-in.

Yeah hold out on them I traded my 2002 with 86K for 12.5k and they sold it the next day for 16.5k that was a year ago. I don't think I would trade again. Although I undestand you may have too money is getting harder to come by these days. Better yet it is easy to get but not worth much.

Your getting screwed. Go to EDMUNDS.COM print out the trade in value of your truck and the "what others paid" for the new truck. Take the print outs with you to the dealer and tell them that is the price (both of them) you will accept. Good luck.

It is rare to get a dealer to give you more than wholesale, unless they just added back on the truck you are buying. Always work the deal on the one you are buying & do not mention the trade until the last moment, when you have agreed on the deal. You may have to go to a different dealer, now that they know you are trading.

Timmer is right. You will get the best deal from the internet sales person. Use Carsdirect.com or edmunds.com . They have a way you configure your truck & hook you up with local dealers internet sales people. Print off all the pages to take with you. I used carsdirect on my 03 Tacoma. I was able to get my truck for $2,000 below invoice in 03. You can even haggle the carsdirect price. Plus if you get to the lot & they do not have the exact vehicle. Any other vehicle you choose, they will run it through carsdirect to get the pricing. After you come to an agreement; say "by the way I think I want to trade my vehicle"

    Good luck,
    Sean

This used to be the way to get a great deal, not sure if matters much anymore. Long ago you could get a better deal from a po-dunk dealer in a small town. The factories gave them better incentive money for being in a rural area. Compared to dealers in populus areas, that sell alot of vehicles.

    Example:
The big thing long ago here in GA, was to drive to Athens & buy a car. You could get a much better deal than you could in metro Atlanta. Athens has grown, so I'm not sure if that still applies.

    bro,
you should've not tell them anything, u should've start saying u are looking at the 09's and go from there... finish the deal and the finance then throw in the trade in.

gas prices is not helping toyota to sell the trucks!

The fact that they went up $1500 on your trade it and down $1000 on their price immediately shows that they were already trying to screw you out of $2500 right off the bat. I'd point that out to them and move on to a new dealer...

Timmer hit it on the head. Have your material and research with you. I even go in with a calculator and pen just to let them know I am not some rookie. The last three vehicles I bought were located on the internet through the internet manager of a dealer. They are pure volume and need to move on to the next sale so they will either get you what you want or tell you no. On my current Taco, I went in with a number and said meet it and I am out and they did. The whole thing took 30 minutes.

I have found that the better prepared I am the better the deal goes. Remember, car salesman are hurting big time now and will deal. Be aggressive, confident and prepared.

There's something wrong with your math. It doesn't pay to have one ready to go but it is easier.
You can get $2-$3k more out of your truck by selling it privately + you'll get a better price on the new truck by not trading in. It doesn't cost $2-$3k to rent a can for a week.
