Need Help With Factory Nerf Bars

06 Tacoma SR5

Does anyone know how to take the plastic end caps and step plates off of the factory nerf bars.I have an 06 with the factory nerf bars that I would like to refinish with Rhino Lining. I pryed under one of the step plates with a flat blade and it looks like they are held on with those plastic pegs used to hold on trim. Is there a way to get these and the end caps off without trashing them?
