My box is 74 inches long. It sticks past the tail gate about a foot. Which is more than I wanted, but hey.. cant do anything about that. I dont think I would use a box any longer than that, but sometimes u gotta do what u gotta do

The box I'm getting is 90.5 inches long. So if yours sticks out about a foot, mine will stick out aprox. 28.5 inches. That will look dumb and be dangerous to vehicles behind me.

I guess I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a roof rack system to mount it over the cab.

I'm not so sure that box is 74". If long beds are 6 ft (72"), and the box sticks out past the tailgate about a foot, its probably closer to 90" (or 84").

hey man nice work. what thule box is that? I believe I have the cascade, not as big but i was wondering if your box mounts to the steel bars that you had up before. kinda thinking about going a cheaper route.

You might be right. I thought it was the Ascent 1600, but I just looked up the dimensions again and I think its actually the Ascent 1700, which is 91.5" long.

My box mounted to the original (and much cheaper) steel bars and it worked great.. until I bought the tool box. The steel bars weren't tall enough to keep the box up above the tool box, so I had to revise it.
But all you would need is the angle iron, some bolts, some U bolts, and the black pipe. And some spray paint if you wanted.

    Beautiful Rig!!
I thought I'd throw in this Taco with the Yakima Space Cadet Carrier for comparison. It's smaller obviously as this is on a short bed.

May want to try the Thule Xsporter like I have. This is as far as it will go down, but can raise a foot over it's current position and your box would go over the cab instead. I like the rack the author built... good work.

Thanks guys! I've been playing around with the idea of getting a basket for it for the summer to keep a shovel and hi lift mounted to it so I can just throw it on for wheeling and take it off to haul shit. Maybe even mount a spare tire on it when I eventually upgrade to bigger tires.

it was like tracker foot #3 or something.. i only used that one because I got it on clearance for $10. any of the tracker feet should work.

Its not a matter of wanting to keep my stuff dry.. its a matter of wanting to keep my cargo box that I already owned, down low so its easier to access and also its out of the wind so it doesnt mess with my mpg's. this was pretty much just for snowboarding as I pretty much only use that box for transporting snowboards so they dont get messed up from road salt and crap like that.

Topper just wouldnt do what I wanted to be able to do, plus I havent seen anyone with a tool box and a topper. I have thought of looking into a rolling cover so I could have my bars above it and still be able to close off the bed, but like I said.. never seen anyone with a tool box do that. (and the tool box was a definite neccessity.

I would like to get a Soft topper or bestop soft cap but no one will give me a definite answer on whether or not it can be used with the tool box. and I know I wouldnt be able to use the cargo box with the cap.

Idk how far the bed top extends onto the top of the bed sides, but if you have enough room to mount the thule foot kit on the top of the bed side you can definitely make it work. I've been playing with the idea of moving the feet to the top of the bed sides just so I can keep my bed tracks empty.

This is a great thread. I have wanted to do the same thing since I got my truck 2 years ago. This pic really sums up what I would like to end up with. I have a tonnue now and think there is probably room for the foot kits, but having seen what is under the plasti bed rail caps, I think some reinforcing will be in order.

Yea I would definitely use some reinforcing plates if bolting through there
