If under a load, yes. If just criusing on the freeway, unloaded, then things change.

Wind force on the vehicle increased exponentially as you increase in speed

I think instantaneously, you would be using less fuel. But because your engine isn't working very efficiently, you'll use more over the long run if you're trying to accelerate.

So say you're rolling along at 20 mph. If you were in 3rd and punched it, you'd quickly get up to speed to shift into the more efficient gearing (e.g. 6th). In 3rd, you'd be closer to the torque peak which is the most efficient fuel/power ratio. The instantaneous mpg would be lower than if you were in 6th at 20mph, but it's going to take much longer to get up to a more efficient speed since the engine is bogged down.

The recommended shift points are listed in your manual ... I started using them as an experiment and they were a little different than what I was picking naturally by "feel".

The recommended shift points are around 2200/2200/2100/2000/1900 RPM I think but I'm guessing a little, I don't feel like going outside and looking them up. So in general shift low in the RPM range and let the low end torque accelerate you instead of revs and each shift happens a little lower than the previous one. It also seems to match up with the chart that was previously listed for fuel consumption.

Bottom line is to ignore trying to keep up with automatics off of the line, everyone that drives one seems to bury the throttle while the natural pace of these trucks is to build speed a little more slowly.

I don't even look at the tach while I'm driving unless I'm hammering it. I shift in normal driving according to feel. I shift when I want to. The true beauty of a manual trans. Control.

They do work really well when people who know how to use them are driving. But when they are installed in a tourist area where most people visiting have never seen one they cause huge backups.

I don't buy that last statement. It's all about engine and load and gear relationship. The issue is: What is the least rpm we can have doing the work that needs to be done without overloading the engine ? First gear at 4K IS consuming A LOT of fuel. Not exactly my permanent parking lot gear,
