went to Firestone to get tires rotated, the guy test drove it and said that my wheel bearings were bad, he had me listen to a grinding in the right front wheel, then slightly less in the Left front.

Is this an indication of bad wheel bearings ?? ( I too get the 20-50 mph grinding)

I thought the tire had to have some vertical play for it to be wheel bearings...

    any other possibilities ??

I have an 06 Taco and I was having a grinding noise when braking. I had one guy look at it and he told me I needed bearings. I bought bearings and when I took the truck in to have the bearings replaced the guy told me that my rotors were ate up. I replaced the rotors and the brake pads and the truck drives and handles like new. Now I'm stuck with the bearings because I exceeded the days on the return policy by five days.

I'm gonna try to get over to the stealership to see what they say...since its still under warranty I'm sure they wont find anything wrong....( they once told me the grinding in the front end was due to me havin 'over sized tires' 265/75 16's.....)

I have also recently changed my front diff fluid..2x's in 8K mi and it came out really dirty and with little flecks of metal suspended in the oil , as well as in the plug magnet.

The rear diff fluid got changed @ the same time and it looked new...totally clean. ( it has 18K miles on it)

is there some particles of metal to be expected from the front ? I dont do ANY 4 wheeling, and only occasionally shift it into 4wd to keep the gears wet.

    any ideas ?

Here isthe update...The issues I talked with the dealer about are starting to be resolved.

Engine rattle noise - Tensioner pully and bad/ worn serpintine belt. - $ 40.00 ( cost of the belt)

Grinding - some kind of front diff issue AND bad Right front wheel bearing
( Left is grinding too but not as bad) They will only replace the Right side. I had to authorize a take down of the front diff ( the warranty doesn't cover diagnostics) $350.00 to take apart 350.00 to put back together IF the adjuster ( for the warranty co) didn't find anything. Fortunately he did...not sure what it is just yet but I will keep everyone updated.

Kinda scary that I have 2 warranties and NOTHING covers diognostics. I would have been so screwed if they didnt find anything. I would have been charged 700.00 to get my truck back.

I asked why they wernt' going to replace the Left wheel bearing as well and I was told it wasnt bad enough....the service guy actually said ' guess we'll be seeing you back here' WOW nice to hear isnt it ?

As I said ,I will keep you up to date...let you know what the verdict is.
