steering stop cap write-up

aight guys i had another thread asking bout what my vibration issue was so now i know what the problem was and wanted to do a write-up for future tacoma owners with this problem. Maybe this can be stickied.

so if u guys are having a bad vibration while ur wheels are fully locked or parallel parking it can be ur steering stop cap.

The groan you hear when turning is the steering stop rubbing up and down on the stop pads. This is a common condition on IFS trucks. At the factory Toyota installs plastic covers on the steering stops. These plastic covers quickly wear out. Contact between the stop, and it's pad causes a quick loud groan and is especially noticeable when making a U-turn with one tire going up over something like a curb. Despite the annoying noise it's not causing any damage. There are two solutions to this noise. One is replace the factory plastic cap with new ones. The other is to toss out the plastic caps and put a little dab of grease on the steering stop pads at each oil change. With will keep the noise under control.

i just don't drive at full lock. if i need to turn the wheel sharply i just turn it all the way to lock then move my hand back the other way an inch or two and continue on my way.

We will have to fix that. I will try to take a picture (and confirm that I got the right one) to put up here. Stay tuned...

I had this going on with my '91 truck. After trying to keep it quiet and lubed, which only worked some, I just let it go. I examined it occassionally and noted last year that the bolt that the composite cap would fit over had worn into the stop a little bit after 250K. I figured I had another 750K before it would have worn half way through and started to be a concern. The noise I experienced was more of a popping noise when it was wrapped all of the way around.
My new '08 has a much better turning radius, so I am pleased that I don't have to wrap it all of the way so often.

haven't heard the groan on my Tacoma yet, my 92 4Runner had the noise and the stop where greased at each oil change, it helped. Quite often the stops hadf to be greased between changes.

What do you mean Groan? I have an issue when I turn only full lock to the right I hear a loud clunk most of the time only once but recently it made 2 quick clunks. Like a binding noise almost.. could I be in this same boat? or do I maybe have a different issue? Thanks!!

it never does it turning to the left... but does it 99.9% of the time to the right. If I were go to out right now and turn on my street I would have no doubt that it would do it lol.
