Tranny and Drive Shaft Experts

So I just typed a big explanation of what happened only to hit the back button and lose it all. In short, what potential damage to the tranny could there be? The drive shaft and U-Joint shuold be an easy fix, but I'm concerned there may be damage or a timing issue with the tranny.

Any thoughts?

I'll welcome any and all comments regarding this. So lets hear it from the experts and I'm sure the peanut gallery will chime in with their comments of the obvious no grease being the culprit. I don't mind the comments and when I have time I will be happy to share the story (not very interesting mind you), but please don't get too far off the course so I can figure out what to do.

what timing issue? replace u joint and see if there are any other issues?

Don't know about the timing or if this is even a cause for concern, just thinking out loud. I know the drive shaft is cracked where the u-joint connects so It would have to be replaced too. My concern with the tranny was just then when I pulled in to a parking spot, put my truck in park (before really knowing the problem) there was some minor grinding and resistance getting it in park.

How it happened, I was just driving, obviously it is pretty dry and no grease. That is another issue I will take up with Toyota because they do the majority of my maintenance.

No there is absolutely no issues with any timing. The only timing I know is if you are changing timing belt or chain and gotta make sure to time the camshafts right...

Here is what i would do; Replace damaged parts and see how it drives, if tranny shifts funny or has problems getting into gears, replace tranny fluid.

Cool, thats what I'll try. Thats the reassurrance I was looking for. Know anywhere to get a cheap drive shaft? Toyota dealer wants 1K (thats with labor), I found online for $673 ($60 shipping).

there should be no problem with your tranny
the grinding you herd was the drive shaft cracking and breaking apart / draggging, ect.....looks like you almost got away with just needing a u joint.....
i mean anythign is possible but looks like u joint failure.........

 

Bump again, anyone know a good quality and cheap replacement drive shaft? Will the link a few posts up work for me?

 

Hey you said it, not me! Yeah, I saw the busted u-joint, went inside to get the part, came back out to find shaft broke and your Yanks had put up 5. Needless to say my commute home was ruined.

FWIW OP, the PreRunner u-joints can't be greased anyway. Did you feel any vibration while accelerating or hear a annoying squeak ?

 

take that shaft to someone and see if they can weld/fill that lil chip by the end yoke and have it rebalanced
might save you some money

 

^^ that's sounds like the best option.

 

First; that driveshaft from Pro Comp is a front driveshaft for a 6in lift,, won't work as a rear driveshaft

second I would find a driveshaft shop in your area and they should be able to replace the part of your shaft that is cracked, shouldn't be that expensive

 

You can try the yellow pages for a drive shaft shop in your area. They should be able to hook you up. Or try a Tom Woods shaft. Should be cheaper and stronger than an OEM shaft. Install yourself is pretty strait forward with a few hand tools if you have them.

 

Yeah, I had heard that before about the greasing of the joints, but looking at how rusted and corrided it was, I would think it would need something. And yes, annoying squeak and vibrations were both present.

There was a place that repairs drive shafts just west of 35W in N. Fort Worth I used years ago. They were able to rebuild the drive shafts from a early Bronco for me at a reasonable price. Search the yellow pages or Google. I think the place was on or just off Long Ave. The transmission should be OK with the possible exception of the rear yoke.

 

the grinding you heard was from you having to force it into park.... since there was nothing able to stop the drive shaft from spinning then you had to throw the tranny into park while the drive shaft was still spinning since it was no longer connected to the rear wheels. As far as timing goes... there isn't any such thing when it comes to transmissions... that is all controlled either thru you (manaul transmission) or electronically (automatic transmissions) the drive shaft is done and well as far as buying a driveshaft there is a few places that would sell one. depending on what type of driveshaft you want. Research them online and you will easily find information and links to purchase one. Good luck and sorry for the the bad luck.
