TPMS light is on.....but tires are fine.

Hello.....I just joined this site. Lots of good info and this is my question:

The TPMS light turned on about 2 weeks ago but all tires looked good upon initial inspection. I took it to Discount Tire and they checked all four wheels. All looked good but light will not reset. Then last week as I was hauling my son and 2 of his friends home (800 lbs of football players), I noticed the rear right side made a grunting noise as I made a u-turn. Never heard such a noice before.

So I'm thinking I have a busted shock...would this cause the TPMS light to come on? Truck has 105k and it has original shocks....what do you all think?

 

Yes, it was checked. It's still secure under the bed. Is that what you meant?

Hhhhmmm.....I didn't realize the spare had a TPMS sensor. I will do that.

 

No, check the PSI in the spare as well. If it is off, it will bugger the reading and Bam, TPMS light.

Mine has been on since I got the truck in early 08. Tires have been all the same. I have no clue what is wrong with the fucking thing.

 

You may have to reset it once you fill the spare. There's a buttom below the steering column used to reset the light.

 

Figures....kid that checked the tires did not look a day over 18.

 

my spare would leak about 5 lbs of air over a 2 - 3 week period, and it would cause the TPMS light to come on.

I finally found where the tire had a bad plug in it and got it fixed.

 

Just so I understand...only the 05-08 Tacos have got a sensor in the spare and the 09+ don't? Mine came on earlier this week, but I'll check it out tomorrow once I've got some time.

 

Yes sir....I've reset it a few times before. I just did not realize the spare has a sensor. It makes sense now since the light will not reset when I have my spare on....cuz the tire I took off is flat.

 

No..no...no.....I was refereing to past experiences with the TPMS....

 

If that doesnt fix it, just open up the guage cluster and stick a piece of electrical tape over the led for the TPMS light. Problem solved Theres a writeup on here somewhere...

What's the typical life for these tire sensors anyway? Anyone know?

 

BTW - I also found out that as soon as I removed the spare from the truck and it was being repaired, the TPMS light went off.

Once I had the tire fixed and mounted, I just reset the TPMS with the button under the dash and everything was fine.

 

lol yea, they stopped putting a sensor in the spare in the 08+ models I believe because they realized it's a pain in the *** to keep getting underneath the truck and refilling the spare.

 

I'm inferring from this...

I know somebody who wants to replace his steelies w/ aluminum TRD rims. As we know, the sensors from steel wheels won't fit the aluminum wheels. Taking all of the sensors off the truck will result in the TPMS light coming/staying on.

What if he replaced all of his wheels, but left the sensor in the spare (which is not being replaced). Would that one sensor be enough to keep the TMPS light from coming on, assuming he kept it properly inflated?

Just wondering, since it seems that removing one low-pressure wheel will make the light turn off.
