Has anyone had to replace the windshields on their 2nd gen yet? I have been quoted 300 to replace the thing and my insurance deductable is 250 for it(yeah and i have full coverage). So im just coming outta pocket for it no sense in claiming it for 50 bucks. Just wondering if 300 sounds about right or its a little high? Some people are saying my insurance should cover 100% but obviously they are not.
I had something come outta no where one morning when it was still dark and crack into the top of my windshield, with no dump trucks around or anything, so only god knows what hit it. You cant even see the crack from the outside, only the inside and its like the innerds of the windshield, so they cant just fix it, it has to be replaced :/
here is a shot of it:

    yeah its a huge one

My father in law manages a windshield place in phoenix and the mark up on windshields are insane. I think the most expensive piece of glass is no more than $150 (most are around $60-$80)and they only give the installer around $50 per install. So most likely they are making at least a $100 profit from you. I bet you could find someplace cheaper than that.

yeah tell me about it, ive had the truck 3 months and im already replacing the windshield... everyone is like oh a rock hit it; now if a rock can bounce from the road and hit my lifted truck at the top of the windshield and no where else on the truck I would be impressed. Because it sounded like someone busted out my window completely when it hit, scared the crap outta me

I got a safelite quote on my old truck because i had a a line crack from the top to the bottom and it was about $200 if i can remember. But i gotta put in consideration that i had a F150 not a Tacoma so it can be different. If i were you i'd just quote everywhere that you can.

Replaced mine (2010) about a month ago. Safelite $300.00. I also had $250 deductable. Just changed insurance companies from Progressive to State Farm. Saved me over $500 a year with no deductable! 10 years ago no one could beat Progressive. Only had two claims (windshields) in all that time. The cost slowly climbed over the years. Last bill was almost 10% higher.

well I was with liberty paying on a 01 2wd 4 cly single almost 200 bucks a month with a good driving record... changed to progressive and started paying 80 bucks for the same full coverage. For the stang and my truck both im paying 183 a month full coverage on both, so honestly I really dont want to change right now cause every where else wants higher b/c one i have a new truck and 2 the other is a "mustang" even though its a weekender car and a v6 barely driven.
But yeah my quote was through progressive.

Two things I can say about glass:

One is that not all glass is equal. I had a cheap front glass in it from a P/O when the smallest of rocks made a big splash. I was told by my glass guy that it was a cheap offshore unit with bad optics and fragile. Insist on a PPG or simmilar. Outside the truck looking accross the surface of the glass I could see big waves and ripples. Even the good glass that he put in looks like it is winched down in the upper corners.

The second is that I had him chip off the rearview mount from the old glass and re-glue it to the new glass as high as possible. I find that the OEM location of the mirror causes a blind spot that pedestrians seem to hide in. After having to stab the brakes for people stepping off the curb a couple times it was either that or remove it completley mounted higher if find no more issues.

I had mine replaced and if i wanted the one toyota put it it was going to cost insurance $1200 and they found a place that would do it for like 427 or something close to that so they paid for that one. I didnt have to pay a dime

And my Tacoma is a 2010. Is it my bad luck or is the Tacoma a rock magnet. I have a scratch on the latest one too. Fortunately in MA, there's no deductible. Good thing, the OEM replacements are $1200 and change around here. I don't think I've ever had more than one on any vehicle in 35 years of driving. Anyone else have multiple rock hits on their 2nd Gen. 4X4?

This is gonna be one of those "not much help" posts, but too bad you don't live in MA. We get 1 free windshield a year per state law. Of course, I can't buy 90% of the guns the rest of y'all can, I can't even have a rifle with an adjustable stock, so I guess I don't feel all that bad for you.....sorry. As for price, that's in the ball park, if it was going to be over $300 I'd say that's high.

thanks for the input guys, i had no idea cause my little 01 was only 100 bucks with half covered by my insurance company last year, so i had no idea with this '10. I might try and go to the local glass place my buddy uses for restoring cars and see if they can do 250 and call it a day.

I'm in CA, and someone threw a tv out of the back of their truck or something. A 'vette in front of me clipped it and a chunk flew into my windshield leaving a nice golf ball size spider crack.

Safelite epoxied it for $100 and you can barely see a nick now...Also, they give the repair a lifetime warranty, and the $100 will be taken off new glass if I decide I don't like the repair.

The repair doesn't show up on digital photo, so I guess its that good.
