4 Lo problems

So I went wheeling this weekend and started having trouble with my 4wheel selection. First, I was in 4 high going up a ridge and stopped and shut down while waiting on others ahead. When I restarted I switched into 4Lo. Now I had transitioned several times that day w/o difficulty. However, this time no beep but the 4Lo did engage. Then after about 15min of riding, I stopped and went to switch back to 4H. When I switched the beep return but the display still showed 4Lo and my truck remained in 4Lo. I attempted 2H with the same result. I finished the day out in 4Lo with no problems and no beep. Once back at base camp, I disconnected my battery w/o success. Then I pulled the 4wheel fuse w/o luck initially. But after leaving the fuse out and cycling the trans b/w N, D, and R it reset. Whew! Then the next am the truck did what it was supposed to but after 3hrs I had the same problem but then it fixed itself. EXCEPT now everything works perfectly but NO BEEP. Any ideas why this situation my have happened and should I take my girl in for a checkup?

the beep means there was strain on the driveline not allowing the tcase to switch selections. if there is any driveline strain or the gears arent lined up. sometimes it takes moving a few feet with the wheels straight then try again.

The factory "you are in 4Lo" beep is what I am refering to.

 

how so??? stopping just right/just wrong and the gears dont line up so the actuator cannot change from 2hi to 4hi or 4lo. no real fault... just gotta move a bit and try again

 

what??? the beep means the tcase wont switch. its not normal to beep in any selection.

 

all im saying is the beep also alerts you even if you do everything right but have strain on the driveline or if the gears arent lined up right...

to the op it is def not normal for 4lo to beep....

 

I think I read too fast on my initial reply.

To go back and forth between 4H and 4L, the truck needs to be stopped, in neutral.

Also, there shouldn't be any "bind" or "windup" in the drivetrain. It's best if you can switch in a situation where you don't need to be holding down the brake.

I actually don't recall if there's supposed to be a single "beep" when switching into 4lo or not. Repeated beeping means the shift was unsuccessful.

Certainly the experience of it not working as you expected makes it worth while to roll under there and visually inspect/feel the mechanism.

 

Mine will beep repeatedly if I shift into 4L in a circumstance where it can't successfully engage, in addition to flashing the dashboard indicator.

 

you dont need a sensor. If the actuator cant move it will beep. like if you are in 4hi with the wheels turned all the way one way and the actuator cant move the gears or if the gears arent lined up and the actuator cant complete its "stroke" it will beep

It shouldn't beep if the trucks drive-train is engaged properly. If it beeps check the proper steps then try again.

 

Hmmmm...my truck has always beeped while in 4Lo but seemed to engage and i thought this was normal. Glad I asked. Must have been some sort of strain or shifting problem for it not to come out of 4Lo then? And from what you are telling me...it seems that it is working correct now. I wonder if it needed reseting all along. Either way it performed great.

so explain why in neutral, stopped, clutch depressed, foot on brake, it will beep at me. I roll forward 1' try again and itll go right in...

 

I've never once heard the "beep" on my 07. Do all the 2nd generations do this if theres a problem when engaging or disengaging the 4WD system?

 

Yeah I know to be stopped and in N before shifting. I always do this but the beeping despite actually going into 4Lo is what I shouldn't have thought was normal. Still not sure why it wouldn't come out of 4Lo even in N and on flat ground. Thanks for the info.

 

Under stood... i said roll ahead and try again it works. all im saying is that if things arent lined up it wont work, thats why they say to try again...

 

Tried it both ways at the time but usually yes sitting there in N with foot on the brake.

 

Just one more voice...

The beep means stop what you are doing because it is wrong! Start over (Go back into H4, stop and put truck tranny into N, then rotate while depressing the dial into L4). Light should go from flashing to solid when you do this. If remains flashing, you are not in L4... repeat the procedure.
