i'd only keep it and pay it off if you're the type to keep something for a long time... otherwise sell it so you do not have to worry about it while you're gone. put the money in savings (pretending like you're paying off the $20k) and you'll be set to buy a new (hopefully redesigned) tacoma when you return. I can't imagine paying for (let alone paying off) a truck that I dont even get to drive on a daily basis. Just my $0.02

In what now seems like a hundred years ago, I put my '68 GTO convertible in a "secure" inside storage unit while I headed out for the South East Asian War games. I pulled the battery, jacked the car up to get the tires off the ground, drained the gas tank, washed/waxed and covered it with a soft "breathable" cover. In short, I did everything possible to keep the car safe.

While away, the storage place burned down taking my GTO with it. I was told (at the time) that the loss of the car removed any bad karma I had built up and I would survive the year. I did come back safe, but the loss of that car has always bothered me.

So, my advice would be to sell your truck, keep the cash and buy another when you return.

    Hey Ross, a thought,

Sell it, put the $$$ in the bank. Earn a little interest and buy a new truck when you return. Its your biz bro, but I would rather earn interest on my money than pay interest.
For what its worth, been there done that.

Thanks for your service and best of luck in your deployment.

Sell it.....Get a new one upon return. Even if you lose a grand, it would make up on the insurance/storage alone

having a payed off vehicle is a great thing. just think, that would be 400+ more dollars a month in your bank account.

Why not keep it, you will not be racking up any miles while you are over seas. I would keep it a pay it off, then you come home to a truck you own and have the extra funds to do with what you please. Good Luck over there. JOE>

I started typing a long response, but it looked like a case study from my B school days. Keep it, pay it off, and enjoy a low mileage paid off truck when you get back. I paid cash for my '93 Toyota in '93, drove it for 15 years, and lemme tell you, having no payments is a very good thing. For those telling you to put your money in the bank and earn interest, I'd like to ask: who is paying interest these days?

    back to bone stock.
keep it. if you sell it, you would have "rented" it for the year, at a really crappy rate. store it, pay it off, and come back safe and drive it relatively cost free.

car payments blow. do yourself a favor, pay it off and get to the next step of "paying yourself first".

If you have no intentions of selling when you return, than there is no reason to get rid of it now. However, if you were planning on selling or trading up, I'd get rid of it now. You'd save on interest from the loan and can a little more now for it than in a year. Just depends what you ultimately want out of it and how long you plan to keep it.
