    Hey folks,
I currently have the BestTop soft camper shell on my 06 DC Tacoma. I've had it a few years and its been great/versatile, but was thinking of doing some more camping, and would like something with a rack on top for more space to pack gear. I can't put a rack on top of the softtop. I was looking at Leer and SnugTop and saw Leer had better reviews. Any thoughts on this? Also, any place to get a good price on one of these? $1300-1600k sounds a bit overinflated. I'm looking at the Leer 100XL and live in So Cal. I'd be willing to drive out to AZ as I frequently visit that state as well. Anyone work with someone reputable that offers a good deal on these toppers?

(btw, does anyone remember when these were called camper shells? who the heck changed the name?)

I am in the same boat. I want a camper shell with the high back end so I can load bikes and dogs and such. But the price for a new one is crazy. I have been unable to find a used one. Except for a long bed.
    Good luck.

I just ordered a 100XL for over $2400 with options. I would say it is well worth if you can get even the base model 100XL for $1300. They are good caps.

anti lock brake disable mod, fogtime anytime mod, Leer Topper, all pro plate bumper, toytec 3 inch lift, bfg AT, rims, piaa 5100's, some double din head unit (cant remember), warn 8000 winch, DO sliders, hacked frame to fit full size spare, thule and yakima roof racks
Ill trade you my leer for you canvas topper plus 1000 bucks, provided that it is in good shape. there are pics in my profile. Id be taking a big hit but I need the ability to take it on and off quickly. I have pretty much every bell and whistle that can come with it. I live in co so it would be a bit of a commute

Up here they are canopies. And those prices would be about the going rate up here except you wouldn't pay the sales tax.

make sure not to get a topper with a rubber boot, get a window or removealbe window. The rubber boot rubbed through the paint on my cab to bare metal not good. cost 1500 to fix

My Leer dealer warned me about that before I bought mine. I went with the removeable sliding window (100XR).

if you dont ever plan on taking this off, would you recommend it? Does the window allow you to go between the cab and the camper?

i would still get the window i think its only like 85 bucks more. if u got the boot and never took it off it would still cause damage to the truck so yea still get the window. it has a slider like the one on ur truck

I have the XR. The R is the basic model. The difference between the R and the XR is the XR has a frameless rear window and only one unlock handle. The R has a framed rear window and two unlock handles (one on each side). The XL has SUV pop-out style side windows (unlatch and move the rear of the window out so it sits our wedge shaped). The XQ is the high end model.

Here's a PDF of all the differences:

I've got a "JASON" brand camper shell, and I love it. It's got a locking glass entry with a covered lock, side windows open for ventilation, and the large front window can open in the center, or open via bottom hinge. It's versatile, and TOUGH! It actually flew off the back of my truck once (out wheelin') landed on a bunch of rocks, and to my surprise, I only broke a little bit of a corner off. I was AMAZED at the impact it took.

Look at Snugtop's XTR. This is the one I will eventually be getting.

You don't have to have it. You can lock the top glass, but the tailgate can still be forced open.

Personally, I don't lock my topper window usually. I am afraid some asshat will just break it to see what's in there. The pop n lock would make it a little more secure.
