I'am new to this site;but I have already read where some of you folks never read the manual that comes with the vehicle. Those of you that own Tacoma's with 4 wheel drive. The manual does tell you that you should drive your truck in the 4X4 mode @ least 10 miles every month.I had to read this fact in the manual because no one @ the dealership told me.

I went with castrol syntec. i like it more than mobil one myself.

This is directly from the owners manual Section 1-6 "Operation of the Instruments and Controls" under "Service reminder indicators and warning buzzers" Subsection G "Engine Oil Replacement Reminder Light" page 150

Clearing the "Maint Reqd" light on 2005 and up Tacoma's

This light acts as a reminder to replace the engine oil.

This light will come on when the ignition key is turned to "ON" and will go off after about a few seconds.

When you drive for about 7200 km (4500 miles) after the engine oil replacement this light illuminates for about 3 seconds and then flashes for about 12 seconds with the ignition key turned to the "ON" position. If you continue driving without replacing the engine oil, and if the distance driven exceeds 8000 km (5000 miles), the light will come on after the ignition key is turned to the "ON" position. The light will remain on thereafter.

If the light is flashing, we recommend that you replace the engine oil at an early opportunity depending on the driving and road conditions. IF the light comes on, replace it as soon as possible.

The system must be reset after the engine oil replacement. Reset the system by the following procedure:

1. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position with the odometer reading shown (For details, see "Odometer and two trip meters" on page 143 in this Section.) (Note 2: 2011 + models may require using the TRIP A reading)
2. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position while holding down the trip meter knob.

Hold the knob for at least 5 seconds. The odometer indicates "000000" and the light goes off.

If the system fails to reset, the light will continue flashing
Hey ForeRunner, Thank you for this awesome write up! It was very helpful ! I have a 2011 and when I did the reset like the manual said it did not work. But when I used trip setting A it worked. I would of never figured it out . So Thanks again ! ! Much appreciated .

Use the “Trip A” setting. I also have the 2011 model, and the stupid manual doesn’t tell you that. Thanks for the tip that really should be in the manual.

I couldn't figure out why the light wouldn't go away with it set on the odometer but now I am going to have to try it on the Trip A set

Finally!

I knew the Maintenance Req. light was the result of the ODO turning over at 5,000 miles. So I wasn't too worried as I keep top quality P.M. going for my truck. However, that light was on for almost 90,000 miles. I had long ago forgotten about it but now that I've turned it off, I am so happy and relieved.

My MAINT REQ light is on permanently but not blinking. The reset procedure described above and also in my owner's manual doesn't work. I don't get any diagnostic codes with an engine scanner. TIA for any ideas. Don (2011 4WD Access Cab)

I have been living with that stupid "Maint Req" light thingy for about a month. It never dawned on me that I could reset it or that it did not have to be taken to the dealership. Thanks for posting this!

Just put Mobile 1 in and reset the light. trip A worked 1st time for my 2013. Thanks OP! So on all models/yrs the light starts blinking at 4500 miles and stays on at 5k correct?
