Does the V6 require higher grade of gas?

I probably will be getting a Tacoma with a six.
Can it run regular gasoline?

87 is fine.

 

Require? No. The engine is designed so that it can run 87 octane without ill-effects.

Will it make use of 91 octane? Yes.

The ECU is self-adjusting. It will open timing up if you run two to three tanks of premium on account of inactivity from the knock sensors. This will get you slightly more power, and some people report increased mileage (minor...maybe .5 to 1mpg).

89 is what I use.

 

I think mine idles smoother with premium. I used regular in it before and got some detonation.

 

owners manual says it requires 87. I use 91 since all the 87 in this state has 10% ethanol. which is GARBAGE!! truck runs great with the 91.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I feel like it was a valid question. Let's be honest, the search function is usually pretty crowded with information. A question like that can be answered fairly quickly.

 

x2 I used to use cheap grocery store 87...and now im using Shell's V-Power @ 93 Octane.. Definitely improved my MPG, as far as performance, its meh. Not much, but the truck does sound more refined as i accelerate.

 

the owners manual says 87, people say 91+ is best, so i just use the middle one at chevron only.

 

85 works just fine at 6,000 feet. I use 87 at sea level. It runs just fine.

 

I only use Shell, but it's the 87.
I would hope that will work for me.

 

Not to threadjack, but what about going the other way? What would be the highest octane rating that would be ok to use in the 4.0/V6? I've seen some stations selling a really high fuel grade (95 octane and up). Would anything really high mess with the engine?

 

No need to fear...the engine has a knock sensor and timing, being under full computer control, will be pulled if it starts to knock.
