Hi Everyone,
Just took delivery 3 days ago of my 2007 Tacoma Prerunner Access cab V6 Auto. Two things kinda concern me on this otherwise very nice truck. 1. When coming to a stop and the speedometer goes down through the 30-20mph range I feel a vibration. Before I posted here I searched all over the web including here and have seen much discussion but no real answers or cures and a lot of conflicting ideas as to what it might be. 2. With the Tacoma just idling in park I hear what distinctly sounds like a lifter ticking on the drivers side more than the passenger side. I'm not confusing this with the fuel injectors sound. Most noticeable coming from front drivers wheel well area. Interesting to hear what you all have to say. Thanks a bunch. |

GT,
I just got my 07 Dbl Cab Pre Runner TRD Off Road yesterday...I have heard of this "shutter" phenom but with 180 miles mine is as smooth as silk. I have no noise either. Mine came directly from the port in Texas. Congrats on the new truck...I truly hope all gets taken care of.

Congrats on the truck. Just picked mine up also and I've been trying to identify these issues myself. Just not there for mine. Went to an advanced driving school a couple years ago (high speed driving, skid plates, how to drive from the passenger seat, how to ram cars...etc) and one thing I recall from the instruction as well as having used it myself.....is knowing a vehicle through the seat of your pants. Your a$$ will tell you if there is a problem with the wheels, brakes or engine. Listen to it (not just when it's barking!)

Hi 007 Tacoma,
No I do not have the extended life tire package. I have the standard TRD BF Goodrich Rugged Trail T/A. My truck is smooth as silk except from 30mph down through 20mph it feels as if I am driving over small rumble strips....UNLESS I am firm on the brakes. If I am firm on the brakes when coming to a stop through the 30-20 mph range I do not feel the shudder or vibration. Likewise if I am light on the brakes OR coasting through the above mentioned mph range the shudder or vibration is there. On the ticking sound I will try a tank of 93 octane but I doubt that will make such a metallic noise go away. Quote:

if you have a vibration while brake most likly the rotors are out of round take itto your dealership and have the rotors resurfaced

Or demand new ones since this is a brand new truck with a warranty.

No the vibration is absolutely not originating from the rotors. What I believe is occurring is that the drive line is being thrust forward and pressure is applied to take up any "play" or movement and preventing the part or parts from shuddering.
If it were brakes or rotors it would be felt much more in the steering wheel. The shudder I feel is a whole truck feeling and like I stated above happens even while coasting to a stop with your foot completely off the brake. Feels much more like drive line, drive shaft, transmission, and or rear end. |

BTW.
Does Toyota frequent these forums that we know of? I also own a new 997S and they frequent Rennlist quite often. |

From what I have researched it appears to be driveline based. My truck does it but only occasionally. I also have the big surge at a stop when the AC compressor cycles on. I am really not happy with that one but I havent seen a fix for it either. Other than that, it drives great.
I dont know how much Toyota comes here. I do know they go to ToyotaNation.com but that site is huge and covers every model Toyota makes. I think most marques frequent forums any more. They want to see what people are saying or doing to their vehicles. So did you buy the Taco to tow your Porsche to track days?? You have a very nice option of cars to drive.

Thanks for the nice words. No I don't track my 911, it's a Sunday driver and mountain weekend driver.
I will find out what the true cause of the engine ticking and vibration is in the Tacoma, the harder part may be deciding how far I want to take it in terms of repair. I'm inclined to leave it be. But I still must know what it is and any longer term effects. Quote:

Personally, if it is annoying or outside of "normal operation", I would take it to Toyota and tell them that it needs to be fixed. You paid good money for a good truck. It should remain a good truck without the bad attributes.
![]() I am very sorry that you are having this issue. BTW - I don't think Toyota spends too much time on this forum, as it is so new. As we build a larger user base, they will have to pay attention to us.

Engine - Underhood Rattle Noise at Idle or In Reverse Notes ENGINE EG046-06 Title: AIR INTAKE HOSE RATTLE Models: '05 - '06 Tacoma (1GR-FE) August 1, 2006 Introduction Some 2005 - 2006 model year Tacoma customers (1GR-FE only) may complain of a rattle noise from the right front fender area while the vehicle is idling in drive or reverse. The air intake hose assembly has been improved to reduce noise from contact between the air intake hose assembly and fender.

Thanks Evile,
Unfortunately that is not the cause of the engine ticking. The dealer immediately addressed it as the lifters but they referred to it as something else because technically the service writer said there are no "lifters" in the new Tacoma engine. They said they would readjust the lifters. Not acceptable on my new 2007 Tacoma with 400 miles on it. Also there is the bad shudder/vibration that they have no idea how to address other than exploratory. Not acceptable. The dealer was going to swap me out but the truck was just titled so they were unable. I have retained legal representation as of today. |

Hey everyone,
I to have the ticking and the shudder that all of you are talking about. I have a 2007 Double Cab Off Road. It went in on Sat. Waiting to see what they have to say. I went with my sales person whom I have bought 5 new cars from in the last year and all the trucks we drove had the same issue except for one that they just got in and it had a build date of 3/07. I have friends that have 4runners and 2 have the same issue and the other has none. All 3 runners are 2006's. I will keep all of you informed as to what happens. Good luck to the rest of you. Thanks and take care, Z

Ok so I hear from the dealer and they tell me that the vibration is from the tires and an alignment issue. I don't agree with this, but I wont be able to drive the truck till the end of the week as theyhave to fix some scratches they put in the truck before I bought it. As for the ticking, they say it is from a solenoid. I can live with that. But having gone to school for auto mechanics and worked on cars for many years, I have a hard time believeing that tires will ever do what they are complainig of. I guess we will see what happens.
How are things turning out with all of you? Thanks Z

theres also a TSB for an engine ticking noise with updated exhaust manifolds
i too hear the ticking so im gonna take mine in and tell them i have an exhaust leak and hear a ticking noise and new manifolds will be mine =) but every ones gotta realize these things are built by men(or women) mistakes are made parts break could be a ford could be a lambo parts move and make noise nothing is perfect. Give the techs at your dealership a chance to fix it. as for the shudder on decel around 20mph ive seen many posts on this my thoughts as a mechanic if every truck does it, then its a normal operational characteristic of the vehical, but thats not to say they wont come out with a fix for it and ill keep checking alldata for updates on it so far i havnt seen any.

Let's hope they figure out something, I love my Tacoma and if they can't fix it and do end up buying it back I would not know what to buy. Maybe a Tundra? Z
