I had some strange engine noise during the first five or six thousand miles that made me a little nervous. Actually had a buddy of mine ask if I had piston slap already. Had a chat with some folks and came to understand how tight Toyota assembles their shit and forgot about it. I have beat by truck as hard as anyone could and she runs great every day. I say floor it and see what happens. My guess is you will be pleasantly surprised. I was a very paranoid new vehicle owner and was worried at every little thing. It has always turned out to be nothing. I'm no expert but my truck seem to shine when the petal is near the floor, it has always seemed to clean her out.

This wasnt the normal "tick tick" solenoid or valve train noise that's common on these V-6's, it was a full blown " something wants out of the block" sound. My GF was 50 feet away and said" What the hell is that noise?" I turned it off and said, "Let's take your car"...lol
We'll see how it sounds tomorrow...

Dont think so, it only has 6k on it and it's more like a hammering sound that got lighter as it ran longer until i shut it down..

A long shot, but i used to get frogs and lizards in my fan on my Bronco overnight (although i parked it outside) and would get loud noises as I chopped them up, is that a possibility? Good luck!

Interesting! Anyone have a reason why they would do this?

Don't know if I'd describe mine as loud as what you did but I had something similar on my '08 after it sat for about three days. It quit before I could turn it off (couple of seconds) and I had fine oil pressure so I just chalked it up to a leaky/ineffective anti-siphon valve in the oil filter. Hasn't done it since but I've also not let it sit that long without starting it either.

That's another line of thought i was going on. I drove it just 2 days before this incident and it was fine but if it does it agai today first thing i'm going to do is change the filter.

Mentioning the timing chain got me thinking. When i did cams on my Sentra's 2.5L which has timing chain I forgot to put in one plastic chain guide, when I cranked it up it was making horrible metal on metal noise....

Why would they use a chain over a belt?

If your still under warrenty I'd get it over to the dealer and have them check it out...at least get it in their records! What you experienced isn't normal.

Because the chain is stronger and should last as long as the engine. Timing belt needs to be replaced every 100k miles or so...

I had the same thing happen when a cat was in the engine compartment on my old '78 GMC. It made a hell of a thumping sound.

What kind of oil filter is on it. If it isn't a toyota filter the dealer may puke on that. Some filters can cause this.
My 2.7L hammers pretty good at start-up when the temp drops down into the 30's with a toyota oil filter. I suspect piston slap with it. I lived through that with a GMC and two Dodges with starting with relatively low miles on them.

An almost always followed rule is, interference engine gets chains (rarely gears) and non interference gets a belt.

Some non interference get chains, usually because of a high performance interference variant. Thought sometimes the opposite is true if they didn't plan an HP variant from the get go.

Idea being that you shouldn't have to worry about destroying an entire engine from missing your 60k tune.

Not a hard fast rule. But pretty much the case. Curious if there's a variable valve engine with a belt out there.

Is the 1gr an interference engine? I believe some versions are but the truck version is not (2gr in the lotus etc).

EDIT: checking the forum found that there's a lot of people that don't know what interference means. Valves contacting piston. Normally they are timed to miss the piston, if the timing chain breaks, the cam will stop and valves may be stuck open in the path of the spinning engine, causing "interference" in the form of a loud bang and a need for a new engine.
