    btw, I wouldn't say that a knocking noise rules out chain slap. Or worse, a broken link slapping something on the way by. But it would be easy to diagnose.

    Have you taken a stethoscope to it?

    Well guys, gave it a few day and fired it up and it's back to normal, no unusual noises. So it will remain a mystery. thanks for all the suggestions.
