Bad Gas Mileage With City Driving

Hey TW,

I have a 2009 Tacoma Crew Cab 4x4 w/super charger, off-road, 265/75/16 Duratrac tires, and no lift. It uses 91 octane.

I just brought scan guage and have used it for two weeks now. According to scan gauge, I'm getting about 12 MPG on city streets. I don't floor the truck, always keep a steady speed, and during most of the time, I'll let the truck coast to a red light or stop sign. My tire PSIs are 33 up front and 32 rear.

On the freeway, I use cruise control at 65MPH and I get about 20MPG.

Would you say this is normal for my truck?

my 09 4x4 DC SB gets about the same as yours.

 

I have a 2009 access cab and my truck is the other way great gas mileage in the city,sucks on the highway.it's a four banger I was expecting better.245 75 16 air is 33 pounds and it's a five speed,was thinking of adding a cold air intake next spring.

supercharger brings down your MPG if i believe correctly. But welcome to the bad gas mileage club

 

yeah i'm not happy about the mpg either, try bumpin your tire PSI up to 36-40psi that should help a little, other than that you're pretty much stuck dealing with it

 

Duratracs are heavy as bricks, which is probably the majority of the issue. It's a tradeoff for offroad tires. I suspect the S/C doesn't help anything either, but I'm not an expert on those.

20mpg on the highway is to be expected, but yeah 12 in town is low. I'm on 33" Yokohamas and get about 20-21 on the highway, but get about 15-16 in town.

 

I've filled up twice and have followed the directions to callibarate it. And since I drive it every day, I notice that I have to fill up often when driving in the city...

I've been thinking about switching to Michelin MS 2 tires. I off-road maybe about once every few months so now I'm starting to see that the Duratracs are underused for my driving conditions...

Maybe I should take some steroids, put the Taco in Neutral, and push it from the rear end to my destinations?? I'll surely get awesome gas mileage right there.

 

Interesting. I'm on 33's and I only get about 18 on the hwy. Can you tell me more about your truck and what all you've done to it.

 

Obviously the solution is to go off road more often.

 

HA! I get about 12-13 in the city and about 15-16 on the hwy but then again I'm rolling on heavy ass 305/65/17 BFG A/T and I have a 4.5 lift

 

If you can keep your foot out of it, a supercharger will increase your MPGs on the highway. Start/stop a supercharger will kill your MPG's. Everytime you take off from a light, you're creating a lot of power since the supercharger is always spinning and, although you don't need it, you waste a lot of gas.
