    Never saw running out, but very true and good points above. I tested the truck only a few times when new so I would know worse case. As a rule, I usually fill up and recommend to re fill when you reach a 1/4 tank or so, way before the light comes on. ;)

    Next project I am doing... is taking photos of my gas gauge as it drops showing the position for each gallon... I am using 16 mpg as the refrence point... as that is pretty consistant with my around town driving on this tank.

    So, at 0 and 16 miles and, the needle is above the Full line (0 & 1 gallon down). At 32 miles (2 gallons), just below the Full line, at 48 miles (3 gallons) about 1/3 down from full to 3/4 line... etc.

    I will be on the 3/4 line at 80 miles if I maintain 16 mpg... as that is 5 gallons down.

    I will start a new thread when I have all photos... to the 1/4 line, e light or e line perhaps.

    Yesterday, I fan mine exactly 50 miles after the light came on, and put 19.8 gallons (75.00 liters) in it. I got 391 miles out on this tank, with about 75% flat two lane driving, cruise control set to 62mph. 19.73mpg. Load range E tires, stock size. I'm tickled pink, as my old Silverado, in similar driving would give me just under 13mpg. At 4000 miles per month, this is a difference of about $500 per month. Cripes, it almost makes the payment...

    Since we have found that the gauge is fairly constant with our trucks...

    Full tank =21 gal
    3/4 line = 16 gal (down 5)
    1/2 line = 12 gal (down 9)
    1/4 line = 8 gal (down 13)
    Light On = 4 gal (down 17)
    E line = 3 gal (down 18)

    If you zero the trip odometer when you FILL the tank, you can see your mileage as you drive...

    FULL = 0 mile on odometer
    3/4 line @ 80 miles (on odo.)= 16 mpg, @ 85 = 17 mpg, @ 90 = 18 mpg
    1/2 line @ 144 miles = 16 mpg, @ 153 = 17 mpg, @ 162 = 18 mpg
    1/4 line @ 208 miles = 16 mpg, @ 221 = 17 mpg, @ 234 = 18 mpg
    Light On@ 272 miles = 16 mpg, @ 289 = 17 mpg, @ 306 = 18 mpg
    E line @ 288 miles = 16 mpg, @ 306 = 17 mpg, @ 324 = 18 mpg

    Run the figures for the normal mileage range your Tacoma gets, mine has had a range that falls between 14.5 mpg and 19.5 mpg, with 16.5 mpg being the average daily driving. If I am mostly highway, it goes over 17 mpg with 19.2 my all time highest.

    FWIW, these numbers don't exactly match my personal experience. As I mentioned in an earlier post, when my needle reaches 1/2 full, whatever the trip reads is 10x my approximate mpg. And that's after I add the 8% difference in odo reading between my 33" Duratracs and the 30" BFG Rugged Trails that came stock on my truck (which is what my speedo/odo are ostensibly calibrated for). So something must vary from truck to truck...?

    So as an example, if my trip reads 150 miles at the 1/2 mark, I add 8% for the tire size difference = 162 miles, and I usually end up at about 16 mpg by the time I refuel.

    Good info!

    Now I don't need to figure out how much is left when I am on E. :)

    Thank you... and it is consistently so as I continue to monitor my fuel gauge and record gallons at fill ups... the figures are always withing 1/2 gallon.

    Now, you probably shouldn't go down to E or lower, on purpose... but when your light comes on, try and get to a station ASAP and top it off (if you have a roll of money and can afford to)... 17 gallons (+/- 0.5) should go in when the light comes on... meaning you have 4 gallons still in the 21 gallon tank. The needle is over the E line after one more gallon has been used... for me, that's about 16 miles later around town driving.

    Almost exactly what I got while driving north from bay area to Portland as I approach 2000 miles on it.

    Thank you for a most informative thread covering this subject. I am finding this forum to be one of the best special subject ones I have joined over the years.

    For grins, I wanted to check my mileage on mostly highway driving yesterday. I had to drive to El Cajon, about 94 miles round trip, filled up with Costco gas ($3.97/ gal) then topped it when I got back to Oceanside... 90-95% freeway driving, and mostly not over 70 mph (2000 RPM) with just some rare bits over.

    The gauge had just reached the 3/4 tank line... and I filled it with 5.05 gallons which gave me 18.6 mpg. So, the gauge points continue to be correct as they were checked over a year ago for measuring how much is in the tank.

    FULL TANK: 21 GAL
    3/4 LINE: 16 GAL (down 5)
    1/2 LINE: 12 GAL (down 9)
    1/4 LINE: 8 GAL (down 13)
    LIGHT ON: 4 GAL (down17)
    E LINE: 3 GAL (down 18)

    I find the light to be very consistent as well.

    It's usually close to:
    330 miles = 21.x mpg
    360 = 22.x
    380 = 23.x
    400 = 24.x

    My gauge will gradually fall to within 1/16" of E, stay there for 20 miles, pop the light and within 2 miles of that drop to just left of E, even though there's still 4 gallons in there.

    Light came on, topped tank with 16.7 gallons (which is consistent with my 17 +/- 0.5 gal. findings).. Only this time the cost of gas was $4.75 a gallon!
